Is Citi Plus still the best option for overseas cash? Obviously I haven't done a lot of international travel since 2019.

If I have to open some other account it might be time to get started, since we depart in five weeks.

(I'm set for FX-fee-free purchases, with a US Amex Gold backed with a Coles Rewards Mastercard and a Bundll account which charges to my Dragon Visa.)

Used mine in Singapore last month and was brilliant. ATMs claimed to charge anywhere from $3 to $8 but never saw this pop up on my statement. Will be using again in France and Italy over the next couple of weeks.

I didn’t realize that using ING card to pay for items incurred and used one of the five reimbursed charges. Thought it was just ATM withdrawals.

I am going to ask a really dumb question re the ING. I get that if you do the 5 transactions the month before you don't pay the fee to use an ATM overseas which is usually around $5. But I am assuming that you still need to pay the 3% international charge on the amount withdrawn? Ditto for credit card purchases? Thanks

No, there’s no 3% Int charge for ATM or Visa debit purchases. Well, from what I saw in the UK / Germany.

Should only be ATM withdrawals but do note that even if the ATM doesn’t charge a fee, it will still count against your 5. ING charge their own Int ATM withdrawal fee but that is rebated upto 5 times.

In the UK, most ATMs seemed to be withdrawal fee free. So any bank card that doesn’t charge their own fees should be ok as well.

When making a purchase with ING ensure it goes through as a VISA transaction and not EFTPOS (cash withdrawal).

Absolutely no fees or charges. They even refund you the overseas ATM operator fees (if charged). That's what makes ING the best (despite the hoops they make you jump through).
Well then on a $5000 hotel bill and a $3000 ATM withdrawal that will make quite a bit of savings 😀
5 $1 transactions at woollies here I come!!

ING is only an advantage if you need lots of ATM cash withdrawals in a country without Citi ATMS or fee free ATMs.

For purchases and hotels bills, Macquarie Bank and Citi Plus work fine with no fees, jut pick Mastercard (not debit) and always int he local currency.

My upcoming trips see I no advanatge to ING cause UK has plentiful fee free ATMS and you can tap and go most places so rarely need cash. Then in NY Citibank ATMs are everywhere if I need cash for tips, but again most other things take card no problem.

Really?!

That is certainly not what the app suggests. Under benefits, it says: 'Remaining ATM withdrawal fee rebates'.
The screenshot here is what worried me but when I checked the number of ATM rebates there are still four for May which is correct. I didn't know you could check that so panic over.

The transaction marked with X was for £117 so the actual charge in AUD is pretty much correct exchange.

The one ATM I used last week charged a fee. Also ING exchange rate is good. I have Citibank also but finding the management of it a pain.

Sounds like a non-bank ATM then - avoid at all costs (literally!).

Doesn't anyone use 28 Degrees or Bank West credit cards anymore for day to day ForEx tx?

28° was our go to for most day to day purchases for 6 wks in the UK/DE. A shame to forgo FF points but avoided several hundred $ in international transaction fees…

That sure doesn't sound right then.

Was there any notice on the screen when you put your card in or before you withdrew?

If not, perhaps it is ING levying a "charge" which it is then "generously" refunding.
No there wasn't. You may be right. Is ING imposing a charge that the banks are not?
