Is it OK for someone to step on your seat??

Perhaps I'm being slightly trivial, but somewhat personally annoyed in this matter..

Thought I'd share my experience yesterday. I was on an SQ heavily loaded flight in Y, which isn't the most enchanting surroundings of late, when after boarding, & went to obtain a newspaper from crew & returned to my allocated aisle seat to find a person walking all over my seat, making some attempt to put her bags in the overhead lockers.
Understandably, she wasn't the tallest of humans, but I was not impressed with someone walking on my seat with less than clean shoes....:evil:
I merely provided a scorned look at her, which didn't phase her at all as she proceeded to put the said items in the lockers.. with my assistance.
No thanks.. No apology for "tarnishing" my seat.. Really felt the urge to verbally educate her about etiquette... but refrained to maintain peace to the neighbouring passengers..
Has anyone encountered a similar situation to this? & what was the best solution?

I believe the appropriate response is to take note of her home address and turn up in her living room and walk all over her sofa in your shoes.

Meaningful looks rarely work with these types. However Excuse me, do you mind not wiping your feet on my seat does.

No, it is NOT OK for someone to step all over your seat, especially with unclean footwear.

I would have been infuriated.

Whilst I respect your civility, I believe part of the problem is that you said nothing and needed to let it out on here (instead of at her). Scorned look aside...this woman needed to be spoken to firmly but politely

Just like someone who allows their dog to cough on my front lawn and then move on without cleaning it up, would they like it if I used their front lawn to do the same thing?
Some people either don't think first, or they are born ignorant and stupid.
And no, it's not OK to stand, step, walk or jump on your seat under any circumstances.

I don't care if it is on a plane, a tram, bus or ferry it's no feet on seats on public transport. It is just plain old fashioned courtesy. One day I was on a tram and a passenger was sitting in the seat opposite where I wanted to sit and had her feet up on the seat. I looked at her (glared was closer to the mark), she immediately put her feet down, so I grabbed her jumper off the seat and wiped down my seat. Problem solved. A quick calm explanation about how putting feet on seats can make other peoples clothing dirty and she seemed to understand.

A few weeks later I was on the same tram, same girl, same seat, same problem. She didn't learn. On the second occasion I let it go as there were plenty of other seats available. From here on in, I figure that the ticket inspectors are happy for more revenue as it is a $180 fine for feet on seats, there are now plenty of ticket inspectors (with the new myki system). I am sure she will be caught eventually.

My mum taught me that you can't educate mugs. She was right.

I think if she needed to stand on the seat to reach the overhead, then taking her shoes off would have made it acceptable (barely).

Realistically, she should have got someone tall enough to do it, or better still stow whatever she has under the seat.

I would have had words.

no - it's NOT ok. I saw it on a recent flight on SQ - A330 - pax in the last row wanted to use the WC and walked to the front of the cabin, walked in front for the 2 pax seated in 11DF, then down the right hand aisle to the WC. And then repeated on the way back!! Much simpler option would have been to go through the galley one row behind her (SQ A330s don't have a forward WC as I was to find out!!). There was nothing going on in the galley at the time, it was mid flight and all quiet.

But the pax in 11 didn't say anything which was amazing.

(edited to say as usual I see I completely misread the original post which was talking about stepping ON seats, not simply walking in front of them!)

After watching a bit of 'Idiot Abroad' recently (namely China episodes), l'm non too phased by human nature and how people either; a) Don't give a s**t b) Aren't cultured/have manners c) Are idiots . I would have said something though, as mentioned, a stern look is nothing these days.

Reminds of a 10hr flight I was on, window for me, aisle for seat-mate. As a window seater it's my duty to limit the number of times I need to get up during the flight. On a 10hr flight I asked to be let out of my seat exactly twice, for a toilet break. My seatmate didn't want to get up and actually requested that I climb over. To which my response was simply 'no'. Amazing how she suddenly found the will the stand up and let me out.

Gee that's harsh.

I've exp various things such as an idiot abord VA stepping on my flowers which were placed underneath MY feet and not his lol but what annoyed me the most was abord QF MEL-CNS was when the flight attendant kicked (yes she used her feet and not her hands) my bag which had my laptop in it, to put it further under the seat just before takeoff. I said something , but never made a huge issue of it even though I should have.

Most of time I cam across this in an aircraft was if they wanted to get someting from the overhead compartments. In my case, I just get it for them. I am a pretty big guy too so they would normally not step on my seat and they are happy I got up to help them.

Hi everyone..

Thanks for all the feedback, experiences & varied advice to the "solution" - appreciated all so far- some most amusing!

The situation I had on the said fight sector - I believe my best solution at the time was so give the woman in question, a very filthy look that would be in tune with a haunted house feature. Also I managed to play the charades game with my newspaper in tow, aggressively offering long sweeping actions to the seat.. right in front of her.. The best part was when disembarking, I couldn't give a damn about her oversized/overweight baggage that I initially assisted the short cough with.. Although I was verbally muted.. My body language must have really given her a wake up call, never attempt to repeat that kind of seat ladder behaviour again.. :mrgreen:

You see people everyday on all forms of public transport put their feet up, shoes and all, on the seat. I have even seen in the lounges on the cushioned seats/sofas. It really is not good enough but these people appear to think that it is OK and the filthy stuff that sticks to their shoes is not going to harm anyone else. They simply do not care.

If it was me I would have not let her get away with it and asked he to clean "my" seat....
