If AA merge with United (Star Alliance) and / or Delta (partner with DJ) as suggested in Plane Talking blog and some other online sources, what future is there for QF in the Pacific and US?

?????

Not going to happen in the next decade ... waste of time such a question ...

.. there is some discussion floating about AA and US merging, but if such were to occur, US would be heading to *O, not AA to *A.

Thanks for replying.. Sorry for wasting your time...

If anyone else knows why UA would move to OW rather than StarAlliance please fill me in :)

Currently it is AA who is struggling through a restructure while in bankruptcy protection.
There are plenty of airlines that QF could partner up with if AA folds into the opposition alliance.

Delta and United are the number 1 and 2 largest airlines in the USA.No way will the US legislators let either merge with the number 3 airline.

The simple problem with QANTAS is that they are so slow to react to market forces, global trends, & increased demand for existing routes & the most important factor - being negative innovator with all products & services - The QANTAS of the modern day sadly, appears just to exist as a follower.. retraction of routes, service, innovation & style in search of the 'low cost option, of Volume over Quality methodoligy" Certainly in this day & age, this is a short term solution & aggravation of many loyal followers of the QANTAS branding which seems to be devalued & degraded through bad management & less than perfect consistant service levels, all round .. But the most evident result is the once 'loyalty set" walking with their feet & $$$ to other carriers, ultimately experiencing better hard & soft products..
WAKE UP QANTAS MANAGEMENT...This is not 1973 anymore..

Apologies, you didn't waste my time - but sometimes "plane Taliing" is full of it.

Note that US is not UA - the former being "US Airways", the latter being "United Airlines".

As for the *O/*A issue, US is seen as the Jilted bride of the US *A carriers - an AA/US merged entity would be extremely unlikely be permitted to join *A due to USA federal anti-competitiveness regulation.

Here's what the AA pilots Union says about the US merger proposal-
I
n the previous item from Dave Bates, president of the Allied Pilots Association, he discloses US Airways' plans for name and headquarters:
"First and foremost, the combined carrier will be branded American Airlines, based in Fort Worth Texas and headquartered at CentrePort."
CentrePort is the office complex near State Highway 183 and SH 360 in Fort Worth where American Airlines has its headquarters on Amon Carter Blvd.
In 2005, America West Holdings funded US Airways out of bankruptcy court. In that case, the merged airline kept US Airways' name, but put the headquarters in America West's home in Tempe, Ariz.
Bates also indicated that the merged American would remain in Oneworld. US Airways currently is a member of the competing Star Alliance, headed by United Airlines and Lufthansa.

Seems to me that there is a very real possibility that DL and US or others could team up to pick over the bones AA. DL doesn't need to acquire all of it and there are plenty of arrangements that could get around the anti trust issues.

I'm just thinking one world minus AA, and talk of Cathay looking at leaving (again from plane talking if I recall correctly)... plus Mexicana and Malev ongoing woes... looks to be a troubled alliance.

I guess the crux of my concern for QF was they've put so much reliance in the DFW hub and if AA goes, what happens to their Pacific and USA strategy?

Perhaps I'm buying too much into all the gossip.

I do have quite a lot of AA miles that I'm saving for an F award to the USA next year. I do hope nothing bad happens between now and when i figure out when to go

If US Air were to buy AA, it would be precisely to buy INTO oneworld. US Air ís not valued in Star, and would LOVE to get out from the ever-growing shadow of United (now merged with Continental) in its home country.

And, as has been noted above, if US Air did purchase, AA, it would trade under the AA name, livery, and network. AA as a brand has great value; something that US Air will never be able to match on its own.

As a sidebar, my advice would be to take anything you read on PlaneTalking with a huge amount of scepticism. For some reason, Ben Sandilands has a very anti-QF bent. (I'm sure some AFFers would know why, but I don't).

But there are no 'bones' so to speak.

"Ch. 11 'Bankruptcy' " in the USA isn't what we'd call "Bankruptcy" here - it's really "protection" from Bankruptcy.

AA put a huge amount of cash aside in preparation (USD4.1B) for this.

All of the major legacy carrier other than AA have gone though the process at least once.

I sometimes think we should have similar law here. It seems to be one of the only ways that large business (in particular) can reinvent itself. With vested interests everywhere from management perks to employee unions and other interested parties, too often it seems the combined stakeholders would rather see an entity killed than reborn.
