While in Nova Scotia try and get over to Digby to see the Bay of Fundy Bay of Fundy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia amazing sight!

The Bay of Fundy is known for having the highest tidal range in the world. Rivaled by Ungava Bay in northern Quebec, King Sound in Western Australia, Gulf of Khambhat in India, and the Severn Estuary in the UK, it has one of the highest vertical tidal ranges in the world. The Guinness Book of World Records (1975) declared that Burntcoat Head, Nova Scotia has the highest tides in the world:

“The Natural World, Greatest Tides: The greatest tides in the world occur in the Bay of Fundy.... Burntcoat Head in the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia, has the greatest mean spring range with 14.5 metres (47.5 feet) and an extreme range of 16.3 metres (53.5 feet).”

Yes we have been there before, only managed a day on Cape Breton 3 in total in Nova Scotia, this time 5 days to relax and enjoy the heritage. My last name is Irving, thought when I drove into the fuel station with the same name they may have offered me a discount, bit disappointed with that. Interestingly they derive from the same part of England my father came from so there may be some ties, hopefully they remember me in the will :)

Great thread guys, thanks for all the info, I head over next weekend for a week and this had added a lot to my notes

My family and I spent a week in NYC September 2012 and loved it. We are going back for 12 days this December. Just about everyone I know who has gone to NYC has loved it, there is so much to see, every neighbourhood is different. 10 days will give you a great feel for the place. Plan what you want to see to make the most of the time you have there, as you will leave knowing that there is a lot more to see and do there. Enjoy the experience.

You Must go to the farmers market at the docks in Halifax for the best pasties I have ever eaten. They even had pumpkin ones as we were there around Hallowen, also the Citadel in Halifax.

10 days would be too long for me. Been there twice... Nyc is overrated imho...

Yes, been to Nova Scotia before, stayed in Halifax. That's why we are going back :)

We usually have 5 nights in each USA city, find its enough time to see the sights.

Five days in most US cities would be plenty for me, too.
But five weeks, or better still, five months in NYC would be brilliant. And that's after umpteen visits over several decades.
So, as always, it's a case of each to one's own. :)

Just got back from 8 nights in NYC, first time visitor. Beside the fact that 4 nights were at the tennis, I barely scratched the surface of things to do in NYC. While I think I preferred Chicago overall, NYC is an amazing city. I can highly recommend the free (pay what you want) Walking Tours (New York Tours | FREE Tours by Foot). Great way to see different parts of the city and learn about the things you are walking past. I did four different tours while I was there.

I hope 12 days is not too much next May when I'm there, I suspect that I could stay a lot longer as I haven't been for some time. I have the first week in an en-suite Airbnb room in a lovely apt in the East Village.

Than, up town a bit to a very reasonably priced hotel ($140 pn - no tax), around west 23rd.

I'll look up the walking tours. What sort of money do they seem to think is a fair payment?

They quote on the website that other companies charge $40-$60 for similar tours. I saw plenty of $5s, $10s and $20s being handed in. My guess is that $15-$20 would've been common. I gave between $25-$35. Sometimes the group was larger or it was too noisy and felt that impacted the service. Ultimately, you can walk away and not pay anything. That's their motto.

Thanks, good knowledge and some very interesting talks and walks and bike rides too.
