Is there a trick to Qatar J awards? 90K visible in the summary, not in the results

Hi. I can see 90K J flights from Aus to Europe in the calendar summary, but every time I select a trip it shows 180K. Where are the flagged 90K trips hiding?

Are you sure they are 90K J seats and not Y seats at twice the cost (ie 45K x 2 for Y = 90K)?

Edit: Typo

A few months ago, Qatar stopped offering award flights between Australia and Europe for 90,000 Avios, and it also stopped business reward availability on partner airlines such as Virgin Australia. I don't think they officially announced anything but the speculation was that this was because of the increased demand caused by the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics.

As of now, as you know, the 90,000 Avios business awards have not returned. If and when they do return, and why they were pulled in the first place, really is anyone's guess.

If that is the case, is there still value transferring points to QR? We just have to assume that J to Europe costs 180K one way

I wouldn't transfer points speculatively. However, I'd consider doing so if there were another 20% bonus promotion. After all, with a 20% bonus a "Flex" award ticket (ie. a 180k award ticket) to Europe would effectively cost only 150,000 points, which compares favourably with Qantas' 159,000 points on partner airlines, and there's plenty of availability too.

As I said, they still exist, but none for European peak summer period at the moment — and there may never be.

There is close in availability:

I thought that for a moment but the same thing happens when 45k is shown in the summary for Y seats. They’re not in the detail. The original search was for J and is a one way search. Perhaps it is showing the Y 90K though when the J aren't there, assumed otherwise due to the search and seeing mention of 90K flights on here.

They've largely disappeared at the end of calendar, but some are available close in.
Do you have a date handy for the close in ones? Edit: Ah, I see your other post. That close, ok!

Well that's bad timing :D

I use Avios to book Qatar Airways so have full access to their rewards itinerary as soon as they become available. From my own experience (confirmed by some other AFFs on here) Qatar operates blackout dates for their rewards seats, with only flexi rewards in J available from 14th December 2023 onwards until end January when I looked 361 days in advance. It looks like they're doing something similar for European Summer 2024.

I didn't realize I would have to correct myself so soon. 😳

I have just scored PER - EDI in J for 90000 Avios + $362 in taxes on 16th December. 🤩

An absolute fluke. I just decided to go on a random search to kill a few minutes and saw this non-flexi award option pop up. Unfortunately, I cannot see any further non-flexi availability originating from PER around the Christmas holidays but I can confirm now that it does exist, albeit extraordinarily hard to come by!

I obtain my Avios via BA Adventurer subscription - the cost of 90,000 Avios works out at a roughly $1600.

Ha, I had tried a bunch of destinations, but not EDI 😆 Will keep trying.

Thanks for those numbers. I’m considering a subscription myself and I think this will put me over the line.
Unfortunately the BA Subscription is no longer as good a deal as it was when I got it earlier this year. When I purchased BA Adventurer it was 1789GBP but since 01/05 it has increased to 1989GBP. On top of that the Australian Dollar was a little stronger at the start of the year.

Keep in mind that the BA Adventurer only gives you 16,667 Avios every month to reach the total of 200,000 Avios per year, so unless you have some Avios previously stashed away you're looking at waiting 5-6 months before you've got enough for a J redemption to Europe.

I recently found multiple options in January. Quite a few from ADL, some from PER. Multiple hits to arrive in ATH. There was another city or two I found instances of but can't remember. Also, only 85K points these ones, not 90K. Just booked ADL-ATH on the 9th of Jan for 85K Avios + $379 with QSuites on the long leg :)

edit: By found multiple options I mean non flexi ones. Started seeing the plain white squares without icons all over the place!

I think the 90J are an urban myth.

Can confirm they still exist, and for only 85K too. See above!

What I meant was that Qatar had stopped offering NEW flights 11 months out for 90K Avios. Yes, there are still flights appearing for that price, but not when Qatar opens the calendar. Apologies for not making myself clearer.

I transferred 150K MR points when the 20%+ deal was on to get 180K points for 2 x Euro J seats, but sadly don't think those 90K unicorns will return for a long time. I'm hoping the Feds will open up slots for QR, then the saver awards will return.....
