"Island Dining" in the Domestic J lounges: Tips, Timing & Menus

I've seen it in SYD consistantly. Never been in MEL at night.

I don't recall it ever being in BNE

It was in BNE last Friday night. From recollection it was a ragoue or a goulash or something similar. I still haven't had island dining though - just seems like such a poor idea.

I've been in the MEL J Lounge every Friday (occasionally Thursdays) for the last month and a half, sometimes around 6:30pm and haven't seen it. I presume the "island" is the tall table behind the food? I've eaten there before, but only with food I've picked up myself. Never seen a menu.

Anyone have the info on what times and days it operates in MEL?

Cheers,
- Febs.

Dunno about operating times as most of my travel is international these days, but on Friday 19th August I was at the MEL JL and it was operating while I was there between 6:45pm and 8:00pm.

Its availability is characterised by places set along the island bench with cutlery, serviette and wine glass with small A5 size menus at each place describing the "plate of the day" and a "matched Wine".

Menu that day was sourdough with a beetroot relish topped with smoked trout, rocket and a creme fraiche like tartare sauce. The wine was a Sav-blanc

A tray of cakes is about as "Island Dining" as it comes in BNE.

Having said that, I once saw them circulating with (savoury) food on trays on a Friday night - pizza mostly. Never seen it again!

Re: The Unloved WP Thread

Vilis make a nice meat pie but unfortunately most service stations in my area only stock "Vilis halal" meat pies.

Enough said....

Please tell me what's wrong with halal, from my experience there is no taste difference?....

I think it's great that companies are offering foods which can attend to the needs of the entire population. One of the things I love about australia is the bringing together and coexistence of multiple cultures - and the opportunity to take a punt and learn from other cultures.

Sorry to raise an old thread... but now that I'm a more regular atendee of the J lounges, is the Island Dining still happening? How about up in BNE?
It has been going in BNE for a while now. The Island dining table is directly opposite to the bar area.

Is it just dinner, or are they doing a breakfast and lunch special as well?
I mainly travel in the evenings and it is available at dinner but generally only find some sort of soup on offer although there was some sort of tasting plate a couple of weeks ago. Most people can easily miss it as you literally need to be sitting down at the Island Dining table before you will be asked if you are interested in what is on offer.

I usually don't see many people ordering in either SYD or BNE but that could be more of a sign that I fly on dinner flights than anything else.

No hints on other choices but there was definitely some more pushing of this - including the matching wines.

Sadly last night it was minestrone soup and only started to be served as my boarding call came through. I wish I had eaten more as the J food was ropey on board...

On the subject of... I noticed that the bars in the SYD Intl J Lounge are set with placemats and knives & forks (the old "coughtail" bar, how I miss that :(). Are they also offering table service dining in the Intl lounges? Or is it just there to make it look like the bar now has a purpose?

I'm pretty sure there are placemats and cutlery there almost all the time.
