Well, this is a new experience. I’m on a Qantas classic reward flight from Osaka to Sapporo in business on JAL, scheduled 11:30-1:20.

Seatbelt outside came off and I was offered a paper cup of juice.

And then, nothing. The cart carried on down the back of the E190 and I haven’t seen the flight attendants since.

I was expecting lunch!! Obviously didn't do my homework. Searching, I see now that it’s well known thing, but I didn't even consider I should check. I mean, not even a packet of rice crackers or something?

I should’ve had more than one of those rice balls in the lounge 🙄.

Yep, Japan domestic is incredibly no-frills.

"Class J", as you have experienced, has the same service as economy. You do get a meal in what's labelled as "First Class", but it's a lot more expensive. The Class J seat is also no better than a PE seat, even on widebodies.

The lounges are the same - domestic business class lounges have beer, soft drinks, and snacks (the Rex lounges here have better options), and domestic first class lounges have rice balls.

To me, the value proposition of Class J is the (slightly) nicer seat. On JAL, you can standby for a paid upgrade at the airport for very cheap (IIRC it starts at ¥1000) - which I find worth.

I do think that it's unfortunate that these seats are sold as business reward seats, but I guess there really isn't another way to class them.

The seat on the E190 was definitely business and quite comfortable. WiFi was good.

As I posted in another thread, the 'first class' lounge at ITM Osaka is pretty basic too!

Live and learn.

Ah yes, the famous JP domestic flights 🤣

I think I'd done it once in all my travels... nowadays I use sleeper trains or overnight ferries if I have to do long distance.
