Jetstar has applied to the IASC for additional seats into Indonesia.

They propose the launch of:
  • Cairns - Melbourne - Denpasar (1x daily A321neo, effective 1st May 2024)
  • Adelaide - Perth - Denpasar (3x weekly A321neo, effective 1st August 2024)
Application states these services will be operated on a “through flight number and from international-to-international terminals.”

Obviously they’re trying to circumvent capacity restrictions to the major cities by tagging them with a ‘regional’ port.

This will bring both the Melbourne to Denpasar and Perth to Denpasar routes up to 4 flights per day.

The CNS-MEL-DPS route is pretty cheeky. ADL-PER-DPS makes sense.

If approved, QF will take almost all (2320) seats of the 2500 available for the "QR special" capacity.

Not much time for the F lounge before the MEL-CNS sector

Some poor soul is going to end up booking CNS-DPS via MEL because some terrible 3rd party online TA has advertised it as a "direct flight".

That being said the QF Platinum in me says another domestic flight leaving from MEL (or SYD) is always welcome. The QF F opens at 5:15am in MEL opening the door for quick breakfast before heading up to Cairns.

Now also looking at the agreement, I'm surprised they didn't go with OOL instead of CNS?

Maybe future CNS - KIX plane?

Could make sense timing wise and allow the KIX passengers to potentially through check all the way to MEL.

The way the frequencies look, the ADL-PER, PER-ADL tags are at a similar time to the existing ADL-PER-ADL flights in the afternoon which have been the same schedule forever.

We are flying DPS - Perth - Adelaide on one PNR as an award flight next year. First leg on Jetstar the second on Qantas. All daytime flights.

Either that or there's more chance of filling MEL-CNS on the tag flight than there would be OOL-CNS?

I don’t think this factors into it. They’ll just remove the morning MEL-CNS-MEL domestic rotation and replace with this one. Many days it’s already operated by an A321.

Jetstar media release

Tuesday, 21 November 2023: Jetstar has today revealed plans to significantly expand its network out of Perth in 2024, with new direct flights to Singapore, coughet, and Bangkok offering West Australians more choice and low fares across Southeast Asia*.

As part of its West Australian expansion, Jetstar will open a new Perth pilot base for at least 60 pilots, and base four aircraft in the WA capital, including the newest aircraft in its fleet – the Airbus A321neo LR.

Basing pilots and aircraft in Perth will allow the low-fares airline to continually build on its domestic and international network out of the west, with more new routes to be confirmed in the coming months.

The QF group now friends with PER airport looks to have helped.

Will be nice to have another option up to SIN, wouldn't be surprised if it operates in 1 direction as a red eye as 3K used to do.

Not sure id do Thailand however, those seats are pretty hard.

Considering there's at least 180 seats left in the DPS "Regional Hopper specials" for Indonesian allocations, QF mainline could pick it up for ex-BNE (via DRW or TSV), or VA for the "WA/FIFO specials" e.g PER (or SYD) via BME/PHE to DPS.

Edit: Back On-T: Saying that, on a serious note can't see QF or VA being interested. Tipping the final allocation would probably be snapped up by JQ also for more regional "Bali hoppers"

HKT will be interesting, TG haven't restarted BKK so it removes a stopover and might also provide some connecting traffic elsewhere in Thailand if they will partner with a local airline

Also allows them to use foreign crews paid a few dollars an hour (and sharing hotel rooms) on domestic sectors.

Hold that thought...

JQ applied on 20 November to snap up all the remaining capacity but on 15 Dec VA submitted they would like to operate ADL-PER-DPS (starting 15 May 24) and OOL-PER-DPS (starting 26 June 24).

JQ has responded by saying they got in first and other carriers can still operate from other non major cities (like OOL-DPS) and also mentioned that they've got better flight times and networks.

Submissions are open until 24 Jan for anyone to respond and QAL (owner/operator of OOL/TSV/ISA and LRE) have responded in favor of VAs OOL-PER-DPS route mainly because of the OOL-PER flight noting in their response that JQ has been varied in their OOL-PER capacity.

From here I wouldn't be surprised to see the allowance split in half between JQ/VA but that remains to be seen.
