Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

Re: General Jetstar Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

OATEK, yes of course it should be 'JQ2.' My apologies.

Re: General Jetstar Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

JQ24 from NRT to MEL is expected into the latter at 2340 tonight in lieu of 2140 hours, but is not immediately forming another flight so it seems.

Presumably not helped by storms in southeast Queensland, JQ567 from BNE to MEL is an expected hour and 35 minutes late this evening, landing at a forecast 0045 hours on Friday 18 September. On Wednesday night it was 40 minutes late.

Re: General Jetstar Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

JQ is, delays wise, having a day to forget in MEL with JQ507 from SYD landing 56 minutes late at 1201; JQ435 from OOL landing 74 minutes late at 1229; JQ742 32 minutes late in from LST at 1342 and JQ461 from OOL expected 45 minutes late at 1425, while JQ771 from ADL (doubtless with excited Adelaide Crows football followers on board) is a forecast 80 minutes late at 1510 this afternoon (Friday 18 September 2015). JQ706 gfrom HBA is a sugegsted 35 minutes late at 1430, while JQ437 also from OOL is likely to be 28 minutes late arriving at 1523 or so. JQ793 from MCY is forecast to be half an hour late arriving at 1545.

One difficulty is that at busy times such as today with footy fans streaming in by air (as well as road and on 'The Overland' train to Melbourne Southern Cross), JQ can 'run out' of available gates or bays in MEL, although I have seen JQ planes using the "old" wing of the QF terminal, typically at gate 10 or 11 down at the extreme end of that "original" pier (wing).

The 'alleyway' terminal that JQ uses is quick to run out of seating when delays occur and flights are busy (although today, inbound flights from ADL would be busiest of all) and not many passengers seem to use the upper level QF seating adjacent to gates such as 21 or 23: the JQ passengers seem to 'prefer' to stand downstairs, perhaps out of fear that their flight time will be further altered and they will miss the call or screen indication.

Many departing JQ flights from MEL are also late, with JQ574, the 1340 hours to BNE, yet to depart at 1412 as I write this; JQ536 to SYD is expected to depart at 1455, 45 minutes late while JQ975 to CNS is expected to be 75 minutes late in being off blocks at 1545 hours. JQ476, the 1735 to NTL is expected to be 65 minutes late departing while minor delays of 10 to 20 minutes are occurring with some other flights.

Re: General Jetstar Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

JQ560, the 0725 to BNE ex MEL this morning did not depart until 0932, a very significant delay. While I am not sure if it is the same plane, JQ575, the 1245 timetabled arrival ex BNE is not due in until 1435 hours. At this stage no further departure ex MEL is showing as late as a result: the inbound appears to be forming a flight to TSV at 1620, but that can change at short notice given the relative uniformity of JQ's fleet - it's nothing like AN was like 'back in the days.'

Re: General Jetstar Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

In the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics airline punctuality statistics for August 2015 in which VA again beat QF for most punctual major domestic airline, TT came third and JQ was at the back of the 'mainline' pack, what is also apparent is the high rate of flight cancellations on some routes.

Sometimes these are skewed by relatively low flight frequencies (if 80 flights are timetabled and 10 are cancelled, that is a greater than 10 per cent cancellation rate), but some examples for JQ include (by direction) ADL to MEL, seven flights cancelled - 6.3 per cent high cancellation rate; BNE to MEL - 10 flights cancelled - 8.3 per cent of all timetabled flights and MEL to BNE, 11 flights cancelled, 9.5 per cent of all flights.

If a surface travel operator had these rates of cancellations, there would be a lot of complaints. Yes, it's true that it's better to be on the ground with problems than in the air with problems but these flights may be cancelled for a range of reasons including insufficient bookings. Yet the airline has advertised and sold seats on such a flight so passengers have an expectation that it operates, just as they do with surface transport.

Re: General Jetstar Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

JQ2 arrived from HNL early this afternoon (21 September 2015) but (assuming it is the same aircraft) JQ35 from MEL to DPS has been delayed from 1735 to a forecast 1900 in its departure.

Re: General Jetstar Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

JQ443 (VH-VWY) from OOL to MEL is about 70 minutes late and due in MEL at 1944. It appears that this may be its last domestic flight for today (22 September 2015.)

Re: General Jetstar Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Another less than amazing day for JQ between MEL and SYD, a route on which it has many problems.

JQ506, the 0920 from MEL to SYD on Friday 25 September 2015 was cancelled. JQ516, the northbound 1305 hours flight departed 68 minutes late at 1413, arriving in the Harbour City at 1537, 67 minutes late. JQ536, the 1410 hours flight, got away at 1649, arriving in SYD at 1817, 162 minutes late.

JQ528, the last of the JQ flights northbound from MEL to SYD (timetabled departure being 2035 - in a few minutes) has been cancelled, begging the question that if QF northbound flights were full or very close to it - quite possible on a Friday evening - what happens? Do the passengers have to 'slum it' in the airport - it's too late to get the NSWTrainLink XPT to Sydney as an alternative overnight conveyance.

Few AFFers seem to travel JQ (which given its unreliability does not surprise) but it would be great to hear from affected passengers (particularly the last mentioned cancellation) to read of their experience.

Re: General Jetstar Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

JQ2 on Sunday 27 September is arriving in MEL ex HNL at a forecast 1730 hours, 10 minutes early. It appears to be forming a badly delayed JQ17 to HKT, altered to depart at 1800 in lieu of 1445 hours.

Since a half hour turnaround for a widebody jet is impossible, the delayed coughet flight might not leave until 1835 or so. I am assuming that the gate information does not change and that another plane is made available to operate the Thai-bound flight.

It may be unrelated to yesterday's delays in and out of BNE but Monday 28 September's JQ566 has been delayed in departing MEL from 1450 to a forecast 1605 hours. This is because JQ563 has been similarly delayed from BNE to MEL in arriving at 1520 in lieu of 1420 hours.

JQ214 on Monday 28 September 2015 will be an estimated two hours late into MEL at 2335. As a result, the return flight to AKL - JQ215 - is forecast to be 45 minutes late in departing at 0015 on Tuesday 29.

Earlier JQ1 to HNL departed MEL at 1922, 42 minutes late but seems not to have taken off until 2002 - an inordinately long time. As a result it is forecast to be 70 minutes late into HNL at 1020 today.

JQ943 from CNS to MEL this morning (2 October) departed five hours 17 minutes late at 1132 and hence is not due in MEL until 1445 in lieu of 0940. This may make for some tired passengers who would have had to rise early in Far North Queensland to catch this flight.

JQ950 back to CNS has been delayed from 1430 hours to a forecast 1525.

JQ972 from MEL to PER on 3 October (this morning) was timetabled at 0710 but has been retimed to 0900, affecting its return from PER as well. JQ464 from MEL to BNK has been delayed from 0835 to an expected 0930 departure.

JQ437 from OOL to MEL is badly late due to an earlier flight from MEL also being in this situation. 437 is arriving MEL at 1705 instead of 1530 on Monday 5 October 2015. It should form JQ476 to NTL with a small delay.

JQ216 from AKL should be pulling up at the MEL gate as I write this - at 1800 or so on Monday 5 October. It is almost three hours late. JQ217 back to AKL has been delayed from 1625 to an expected - fairly tight - 1840 hours departure.

While school holidays have ended (at least in Victoria) and one might expect JQ to be less busy, delays to one plane can still reverberate in different locations.

JQ798, the 1440 hours from MEL to MCY did not take off on Tuesday 6 October 2015 until 1553. JQ448 from MEL to OOL was due out at 1525 but took off at 1634.

As a result, JQ711, the 1915 to HBA is expected to depart MEL at 2030 while the 1955 from MEL to OOL, JQ444 is forecast to leave at 2055 this evening instead of 1955. JQ446 from MEL to OOL is delayed a bit less, from 2100 to an expected 2140 off blocks.

JQ is often not punctual on the MEL - SYD route, by far Australia's busiest but three northbound cancellations this afternoon (Wednesday 7 October) is unusual. JQ526 (the 1720 hours from MEL), JQ524 (1830) and JQ528 (the 2035) have all 'got the gong', with only JQ530 (the 1940 hours) operating in this span of hours.

Granted that it is midweek and not school holidays, and hence loadings might be relatively light, but in such circumstances one wonders how JQ accommodates 400 to 500 passengers at a guess. Transferring onto QF flights may be one employed strategy.

Meanwhile JQ743 looks about to depart at 1830, a deficit of an hour and 50 minutes.

Adding to the 7 October delays, JQ477 in the shape of A320 VH-VGV, the 1430 from NTL to MEL took off at 1826 and is about to arrive in MEL at 1949, three hours and 39 minutes late.

JQ969 and JQ971 ex PER to MEL were also cancelled.

Is there some sort of industrial action at JQ? This is a high number of cancellations (including the MEL - SYD ones referred to above.)

JQ602 (AVV-SYD) delayed 2 hours 40 minutes after VH-JQX went tech at 4am this morning.
VH-VGQ was apparently flown to AVV from MEL and landed around 8am, for hopefully a quick turnaround and an 8.40 ish departure.

Was supposed to be on 3k131 from Changi to Perth Tuesday last week, due to depart at 5.50pm. Arrived at airport with two kids at 3pm to be told that flight was delayed due to weather until 3.50am on Wednesday, no assistance provided. Notification via text and email regarding delay received at 3.20pm, was 90 minutes too late to be off assistance. Flight eventually left at 4.50am after one passenger didn't show and bags had to be removed.

First time I've been delayed on 3k and I know stuff happens, but service levels were dismal. No one knew what was going on and no help provided, felt sorry for other PAX who had very young kids who were facing a long stretch in the terminal. We managed to get a room at the Crowne Plaza.
