Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

Surprising given the number of flights in/out of SIN that 3K has that they couldn't co-opt another aircraft

Apparently, it was due to weather, so getting another aircraft wouldn't solve the problem. Not sure what kind of weather it was though.

Presumably then forecast weather into Perth. Limited diversion options, particularly once you've already flown that distance in an A320

the pilot indicated on the 3.50am flight that the original flight was delayed due to "possible" fog on arrival

That makes sense then. They don't take off until they know there won't be any fog. I was once told that there's only about 25 mins of holding fuel available if they are unable to land.

Perhaps due to weather around SYD (such as at Kandos NSW where the Australia's official weather forecasts & weather radar - Bureau of Meteorology site indicates patchy but heavy rain), JQ7982 (A320 VH-VGU) has not long departed Kingsford Smith.

Is this because JQ needs to position an aircraft to NTL? 'NTL' is shown as the destination on flightradar245.com but the Qantas | Book airfares on Australia Pacific’s Best Airline site indicates that the plane is heading for ADL.

JQ822, the 1950 hours from SYD to ADL departed almost an hour late this evening (Tuesday 20 October 2015.) However it is expected to be only about 35 minutes late into the vignerons' capital.

Further to the above delays, JQ988, the 2010 hours from SYD to PER (A320 VH-VGR) is taxiing at about 2150 hours so it should be in PER around 2335 local time, some 80 minutes late.

JQ477 NTL - MEL has diverted to CBR. I wonder what the knock on effect will be, this aircraft was scheduled to do MEL-LST-MEL-NTL. Mr Feezable is due to fly on the MEL-NTL leg,

Whether a specific 'knock on' effect or otherwise I cannot be certain, but JQ477, the 1845 hours from MEL to OOL this evening (22 October) may have been cancelled (it is showing as a 'blank' in terms of 'departing' on Melbourne Airport's website.

JQ678 from MEL to DRW (the 2949 hours departure) did not take off until 2256 (not long ago.)

There were many quite late flights at MEL tonight. not just JQ. It is 'apparently' six degrees cooler than the recorded temperature at MEL airport (a very marked difference), the BOM tells us, but while I have not ventured outside, I don't believe that there is fog however the prevalence of late flights suggests something is 'up.'

Watching flight radar and flight aware left me with the understanding that the JQ OOL flight you mention was cancelled and the aircraft was used for the MEL-LST-MEL run. The aircraft that was diverted to CBR JQ477 was then able to do flight JQ478 to NTL on time.

I am very intrigued as to why they diverted to CBR. The flight was approaching MEL, had descended to 30,000 when it turned and flew back to CBR.

JQ28, the 2145 hours Monday 26 October 2015 from HKT to SYD (B788 VH-VKF) took off more than two hours after its scheduled departure and hence is forecast to be at the SYD gate at 1144, 64 minutes late.

JQ hads a much larger fleet than TT in Australia but regardless, JQ generally seems to now be the worst for punctuality of the 'big four.'

This afternoon from MEL (Thurs 29 October) the 1540 to NTL (JQ476) took off at 1716, the 1550 hours to HBA (JQ703) at 1700 and the 1555 hours to OOL (JQ440) at 1637, while JQ518, the 1805 hours to SYD took off at 1901 and JQ778, the 1825 hours to ADL began its ascent at 1933. JQ780 from MEL to ADL is expected to depart 45 minutes late at 2025 while JQ715 to HBA is faring worse with a predicted 2035 hours departure, 50 minutes late.

JQ797, the 1615 hours on Friday 30 October from MCY to MEL (A320 VH-VGU) took off not far short of six hours late at 2201 hours and is due in MEL on Saturday morning at 0110, exactly five and a half hours late.

JQ603, the 0755 from SYD to AVV on a rainy (in Victoria) Saturday 31 October 2015 did not take off until 0939 and hence is about to land at AVV with terminal arrival expected at 1049, 79 minutes late (A320 VH-VFL, a very 'Victorian' registration paying homage to football if ever there was one.)

The JQ30 arrival from BKK on Sunday 1 November 2015 is expected to be in MEL at a minute short of high noon in lieu of 1030 (VH-VKE, a B788.) JQ43 has been delayed departing from MEL for DPS from 0955 until 1200.

UPDATE: This flight did not take off until 1242. Not only will the return this afternoon from DPS to MEL be late, but JQ23, the 0055 hours timetabled flight from MEL to NRT on Monday 2 November 2015 is expected to be delayed from 0055 to 0215 in its departure.

Storm cells above SYD seem to have led to some delays early this evening, with not many departures, if any for a while and perhaps other delay-causing problems such as inability to unload or load luggage from B738s or A320s and smaller aircraft.

JQ521, the 1725 hours from SYD down to MEL, took off at 1851 and hence is forecast into the latter at 2006 hours, 66 minutes late.

JQ790, the 1720 hours to MCY did not take off until 1830 and is an expected 54 minutes behind time.

Thankfully with Melbourne Cup on Tuesday it is a semi-public holiday in Melbourne on Monday 2 November (not officially, but many may take a super long weekend) so there may be less 'business travel', although as always not many in that category choose JQ over QF or VA.

With today's on-again, off-again storms in Melbourne, JQ was not alone in being affected but its delays rank among the most severe.

JQ574, the 1320 hours from MEL to BNE eventually took off at 1542 this afternoon while JQ564, the 1500 hours departure took off 101 minutes after its scheduled pushback.

JQ444, the 1400 from MEL to OOL did not take off until 1533 hours while the 1555 hours JQ440 also on that route took off at 1819 almost two and a half hours late.

JQ715, the 1945 hours flight tonight from MEL to HBA is expected to depart 65 minutes late while JQ736 ex LST and JQ521 ex SYD, the latter meant to arrive at 1900 hours are among the cancellations., as is JQ567, the very late evening 2315 hours arrival in MEL ex sunny BNE.

Instead of arriving at 0115 on Friday 6 November, JQ449 is expected to pull into MEL ex OOL at 0225 with bleary eyed passengers and (trying their best not to yawn or show tiredness) JQ staff.

Re: General Jetstar Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

On Wednesday 4 November JQ740 departed LST for MEL only eight minutes late at 1738 but was most unusually diverted to AVV, where it appears to have arrived at 1850. The QF flight arrivals website is a bit unclear on what it did next. I assume that this was due to bad weather in MEL.

JQ604 (A320 VH-VFH) should have departed from AVV at 0905 on Friday 6 November but took off at 1140 with arrival in SYD likely at 1248 instead of 1030.

Earlier today, JQ601 had arrived from SYD on time in AVV at 0835 so there must have been a problem at this Melbourne secondary airport.

JQ515, the 1340 hours from SYD to MEL and JQ766 five minutes later to ADL have been cancelled so the late running of JQ604 may have something to do with this.

JQ is having an unhappy Friday 6 November afternoon on the busiest air route in Australia, MEL - SYD.

Nowadays it is routine for this airline to be far the worst for punctuality, a mantle not so many years ago occupied by everyone's favourite target of criticism, TT.

With JQ moving to T4 at Melbourne next week (10 November 2015), it will be interesting to see if that improves its unsatisfactory punctuality.

JQ514, the 1515 departure northbound was cancelled.

JQ516 is expected to be delayed in its departure from 1615 to 1925 - a 190 minute delay. JQ518, the 1805 is delayed a comparatively minor expected 20 minutes while JQ520, the 1845 is suggested as being delayed until 2035 - 110 minutes - in leaving the 'Mexican' capital. JQ524, the mid evening 2045 hours northbound is also cancelled.

Southbound, JQ517 - the 1400 hours ex SYD is expected to depart at 1720, 200 minutes behind time. JQ521, the 1725 hours departure is cancelled as is JQ523, the 1830 hours departure to MEL.

JQ734, the 1325 hours flight from LST to MEL departed at 1516 while JQ740, the 1730 hours from this northern Tasmanian airport is expected to be 45 minutes late.

What happens to all these passengers on the SYD- MEL - SYD route who experience a JQ Friday afternoon cancellation? QF would be fairly unlikely to have hundreds of spare seats in the remaining total of the afternoon's and evening's flights - while it is not school holidays, Friday afternoon and evening is 'peak period' for the airlines on a business route like this.

Yes, it takes 11 hours or so, but unbelievably on occasion (although it's a lottery) it can be faster for a budget passenger to travel by NSWTrainLink's XPT rather than risk being stranded overnight in eiether MEL or SYD due to a JQ cancellation. At least if there's a problem on the train, they typically arrange buses.

It just isn't an airline on which one can rely, but because so few AFFers seem to use JQ (in AFFers' undoubted collegiate wisdom), this site receives few hints as to what happens to passengers who are confronted with a cancelled JQ 'peak time' flight.
