Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

JQ38 (B788 VH-VKG) was meant to depart DPS on Tuesday 17 November at 2225 hours but took off on Wednesday 18 at 1343. Instead of arriving at 0710 this morning, it is on descent into SYD and projected to be at the gate at 2216.

It may be 15 hours late but many would be glad to see flights operating to and from the popular Indonesian destination. The resumption does not seem to have been the subject of much media attention which is understandable due to the tragic event in Paris on Friday evening last.

JQ425, the 1920 from OOL to SYD on Wed 18 took off at 2027 and hence is due in SYD at 2237 instead of the timetabled 2150 hours. A320 VH-VGU is operating this delayed flight.

JQ432 (VH-VWX), the 1000 on Friday 20 November 2015 from MEL to OOL did not take off until 1149 and therefore is predicted to pull up at the gate at 1233 rather than 1105 Queensland time. The returning JQ437 is expected to be an hour late departing southwards at 1250 this afternoon with MEL arrival at 1610 still an even hour behind the schedule.

Earlier, JQ664 from MEL to AYQ, the 0940 took off at 1051 about 50 minutes late. JQ510, the 1040 hours from MEL to SYD has not long taken off at 1159.

JQ703 this afternoon is expected to depart at 1630 instead of 1550 from MEL to HBA while JQ518, the 1805 evening service to SYD is expected to be 70 minutes late departing.

While JQ has a reasonable sized fleet, operating in and out of the new MEL T4 appears already to be challenging to put it mildly.

While the number of tarmac spaces for its aircraft is finite, if I was a JQ timetabler I'd be considering lengthening some of these MEL turnarounds as clearly some aircraft cannot in practice come in and out in the time allowed. Changes would come at a cost as so-called low cost airlines like to have good utilisation (which is not defined as an aircraft sitting at a terminal for 40 minutes when 30 minutes is possible) but if the schedules stay the same, JQ will continue to incur delays that at times can compound during a day.

JQ779 (VH-VQS) on 20 November was timetabled to depart ADL for MEL at 1525 but took off at 1740 for a forecast arrival at 1925, 130 minutes late.

The JQ woes on the MEL - SYD route continue. JQ516, the 1615 hours, is expected to depart at 2035 on 20 November. JQ518, the 1805 will not depart until 2030 hours. JQ520, the 1845 hours should depart in a few minutes at 1838 hours. JQ522, the 1840 hours departure has been cancelled. JQ524, the 2045 hours flight is forecast to depart at 2119 hours.

Even for budget travellers, delays of four hours on a trip that should take 85 minutes northbound are not acceptable.

In the southbound direction ex SYD, the 1900 hours arrival in MEL, JQ521 has also got the gong so to speak. JQ517, the 1535 hours MEL arrival ex SYD took off at 1911 this evening, almost five hours late and is due in MEL at 2042 instead of 1535 as SYD airport was very congested.

JQ420 from OOL to MEL on Saturday 21 November is expected to be three hours late when it arrives at 1420 hours.

So do you sit at the gate or on the plane with all these delays? What is the ACCC or airports doing about this?
I'm sure Virgin \Tiger have just as bad days?

Flagship JQ1, the 1700 hours on Tuesday 24 November 2015 from MEL to HNL did not take off until 1902 despite its timetabled departure of 1700. B788 VH-VKK is the aircraft with its arrival estimated at 0744, an hour and 39 minutes behind. Because the return JQ2 has a fair amount of time allowed in HNL (not being due to depart until 0845), QF expects that flight to only be 25 minutes late departing the 'isolated US state' at 0910 hours.

Just dropped off mate JQ610 AVV-SYD.

1.5hrs late.

Just pushing back now 53mins till curfew closeout. That's cutting it mighty fine, having been a victim of a AVV to Sydney flight that turned back to Avalon whilst on finals to YSSY due curfew I think I'll hang around here!

Sunstar320, it looks like earlier that JQ609, the 1825 hours early evening flight from SYD to AVV that according to www.qantas.com.au departed at 1844 hours struck trouble.

Its flight path on Flightradar24.com - Live flight tracker! implies that it took off at 2008 tonight and tracked to AVV but the QF website suggests that it may have gone back to SYD (after 1844) and then departed again at 2000 (or departed initially at 2000) for a 2119 hours arrival where you are at AVV.

FlightAware - Flight Tracker / Flight Status / Flight Tracking is suggesting that the northbound JQ610 has just been cancelled.

Please let us know what arrangements JQ makes (if any): hotels for out of towners (and where, and half board?) or taxi vouchers for Geelongites or Melburnians. Great information, Sunstar320 and shows your wisdom that you hung around AVV. Your hunch appears to have been right on the money. Many other travellers' drivers would not have known to do this, so they'll be getting calls left right and centre on mobiles, or texts from those that they dropped off.

The passengers would have been better off on the 1950 hours www.nswtrainlink.info XPT from Melbourne's Southern Cross to the heart of Sydney at Sydney Central: at least they'd get there and be enjoying the atmosphere of the 'big smoke' a couple of hours ahead of any JQ passengers, and with no possible 0400 or earlier wake up call.

Budget airlines have their uses but the last flights of the night to curfew-bound airports are a risk (although admittedly many nights it works OK.)

Cancelled

Fully boarded, doors all closed, ready to push back, then pilot announced they won't make it. Down to the minute apparently!

Jq524 was in a similar boat currently racing up to Sydney due 2300. Might just make it.

Otherwise pax off on a joyride!

Sunstar320, yes JQ524 is the 2045 hours MEL to SYD that took off at 2150 this evening (24 November 2015) in the shape of A320 VH-VWT. We cannot be certain but I agree that it should land with little to spare before 2300 hours.

As I understand it the airlines try not to take off unless they are certain that they can 'make curfew' to use very bad English but occasionally further unpredictable things go awry. Turning back is not just expensive but the amount of fuel on board is finite, and then there is the irritation factor for passengers and the crew. No doubt the latter try to remain 'professiona' but what if it was the end of two days' work and SYD, for instance was their home base and they wanted to see their family that night?

JQ952, the 0615 hours from SYD to CNS on Wednesday 25 November did not take off until 0718 so it is expected to be 41 minutes late into CNS at 0901. VH-VWT is the plane. Coming back south, JQ957, the 0920 from CNS will also be late but how much is yet to be displayed on the QF website.

The 1320 hours from MEL to BNE, JQ952 took off at 1511 hours today. The 1500 hours to BNE, JQ564 took off from the Victorian capital at 1617 on Thursday 26 November 2015. The 1555 hours to OOL took off from MEL at 1733 hours as JQ440. The 1600 hours from MEL to PER, JQ976 took off at 1712. JQ566, the 1800 hours to BNE is estimated to take off at 1922 this evening.

Many other flights are late though not quite as badly.

One wonders what this T4 at MEL will be like during the December 2015 school holidays.

On a day when QF with its B717s has had a lot of significantly late flights between MEL and HBA, it does not assist that the 'last' of the night southbound, JQ715, departed MEL 49 minutes late at 2034 with HBA arrival expected at 2156, 56 minutes behind time.

JQ213 from MEL to AKL departed at 1833 tonight despite its departure time being 1630, so it is about an hour and a half late.

On Thursday 26 November 2015, JQ611, the 2140 hours from SYD to AVV had yet to take off by 2323 hours in the shape of A320 VH-VFP but does not appear to have been cancelled.

The 'fax machine' must have been running thick and fast with requests for that mystical 'delegate' to approve curfew exemptions as QF25, CI52 and others were also very late (QF28 from SCL to SYD had earlier diverted to MEL.)

UPDATE: It took off at 2324 hours and is due in AVV at about 0030 on Friday morning.

JQ140 from CHC to SYD on Friday 27 November is not predicted to arrive until 1230 in lieu of a peak hour 0805 arrival.

JQ521 is the 1725 hours from SYD to MEL. On Friday 27 November, it is taxiing in SYD at 1920 so is expected to arrive in MEL at 2040 rather than 1900 hours in the form of A320 VH-VWY. It may be forming the 2200 hours from MEL to DRW so that (in theory) ought not be delayed.

JQ16 arriving on Saturday 28 November in SYD from CNS and KIX is expected to be three and a quarter hours late at 1430. JQ27 from SYD to HWT is delayed from 1510 to an expected 1630 hours in departing as a result.

Sunday mornings are probably second only to Saturday afternoons and early evenings (when no major sporting events are on) as the lowest point, patronage-wise, for our domestic airlines in a typical week.

On a morning when the vast majority of flights are on time, JQ946, the 1115 MEL to CNS has been put back to a forecast 1220 departure, making it inevitable that the return flight this afternoon (Sunday 29 November) will also be late, which the Melbourne Airport - Flight Information, Shopping & Parking site estimates means that JQ947 will pull it back at MEL at 1920 not 1850 hours.

JQ7 ex MEL for SIN has also been delayed from 1210 to a suggested 1300 hours. Passengers can have the delightful experience of watching the competing Scoot flight pull out on time as it often does.
