Jetstar International - upgrading to Star Class at check in.

I can't shed any more light on local regulations, but in addition to this year I'm aware from other people I've travelled with that they have successfully upgraded in Japan coming back to Australia for the last few years.

Mind you, JQi weren't very well set up to take payment for upgrades by credit card at NRT (this year). The process was:

1. Line up in the economy check-in line.
2. Get to the front of the queue and enquire about availability in Starclass. Once confirmed, get sent to the ticket/service desk to start the upgrade process.
3. Get sent to a separate cashier's desk to take payment and issue of receipt (this is where the main delay was - it took the best part of half an hour for it to be processed).
4. Get receipt and go back to ticket/service desk. Referred back to check-in agent for issue of boarding pass and collection of luggage.

This is the only place that is authorised to take cash in. Where you pay for excess baggage, etc. Like me, you were probably stuck behind some ****heads trying to argue why they should be allowed to carry on 9kg of extra ski gear.

flew yesterday, BKK-MEL, 6000 baht (AUD220) for on departure upgrade, good deal. Thats down from 9000 baht last october. Apparently it is 8000 baht sometimes too. I'm not sure when or why they change the price.

Flight was as expected quite empty, 10 in *Class, economy looked to be 30-40% full. We also had some special VIP's, a male was escorted on in handcuffs by what appeared to be Aust. Federal Police.

Will see if points/sc's get credited in next few days.

Hi Guys,

Just an update for those interested. Points and SC's posted for *Class 8 days later. I have had 100% success rate ex-BKK on getting SC's. 3 out of 3.

Cheers Guys

D

dazz81, did the points credit automatically or did you submit a missing points claim to Qantas? If the former, was your QFF number already listed with the booking or did you get the check-in agent/cashier to enter it?

credited automatically. FF number was associated with ticket when i booked the jetsaver fare. Double checked at check-in they had the number in correctly which she said was already in.

update:
JQ currently has KIX-OOL upgrade to starclass for 17,000 JPY (usu 25,000). But you do not get the extra baggage allowance that is usually associated with a starclass fare. Just the plain jane 20kgs economy gets. Stupid. Is that the experience others have been getting? Cash or CC accepted (not AMEX) and payment counter is right next to check-in desks.

I don't think that's an issue to be honest. If you arrive at the airport, with say 5kg over the 20kg limit and they say no to paying for an upgrade to *class, what are you going to do then? :)

You should always arrive at the airport with your luggage being within the specified limit for the fare you have paid.

I guess that's to stop people who arrive with excess baggage just using a starclass upgrade which may work out cheaper than paying for the baggage.

They enforce this rule in BKK also. you only get the baggage allowance you originally paid for.

Earlier this month a friend and I flew from MEL-CNS-NRT on the 2 for 1 special that Jetstar released around March meaning we got the return fares for just under AUD500 each. At the airport at CNS we asked about the starclass upgrade and were told they were available for AUD200 each, which of course we jumped at. Starclass cabin had about 10 people on the flight while economy was almost full.

On the return at NRT we arrived fairly early for check in and were behind about 10 in the queue when check in opened. The checking board had a scrolling message advising that upgrades were available for JPY17,000 so again we jumped at the opportunity. Again only about 10 in the cabin (after a group of 5 in front all upgraded as well) and economy almost full.

Even though i already had qantas club access so this wasn't a benefit from the upgrade I couldn't see how anyone could turn this down. Made the flight so much more tolerable.

As per previous posts 8 days after each flight the points and credits posted automatically to my QFF account. This all makes flying Jetstar a much more likely prospect, if only I could be guaranteed an upgrade every time.

So all up it was AUD900 return to Tokyo. What a bargain!

Thanks sdevans11!

Has anyone a recent experience with cash upgrades to *Class on flights to and from Bali? We are flying MEL-DPS early October and return mid October, and the additional SCs would finally take me to Gold. Is it worth calling them a few days before and asking proactively?

Different route but same call centre. I tried calling 3 days and 1 day prior and they were less than helpful. One person even said that the business cabin was full! It may have been a bit more difficult as we have a domestic leg first. Always worth a try in my opinion.

Is it possible to ODU just the MEL-CNS sector? Anyone know how much that would cost and/or how many SC's it would generate?

I already have a QF ticket MEL-CNS return for 40 SC's in Y, but I could change it to JQ if the money for an upgrade represented OK value for SC's, and there was reasonable likelihood of being able to do so.

I don't think that is possible. From the limited searching I've done it appears that MEL-CNS is operated by an A321, which I don't think would have a starclass cabin.

Nice turn in my case today: received a call form JQ offering me to upgrade my MEL-DPS flight early October to *Class for $199 per person :D. To good to resist! I asked about the SCs but the lady wasn't able to confirm if I get those as well, only referenced to QFF points and all the other bla bla (extra luggage, lounge, food...).

Checked my new itinerary and booking class is still on JetSaver, but seat allocation is now 4J&K for the 2 of us, plus listing the upgrade fee in the Charges section. Hope the SCs will be credited, would make me Gold finally!

Once again and again and again and again.
YOU RECEIVE ALL SC's AND POINTS FROM A STARCLASS ODU - BUSINESS CLASS

Congrats for getting Gold!

The above is correct ALL ODU's on JQi receive J status credits and points.
This IS JQ policy.

Are you sure? I can't recall the reference (it was posted on here a while back) but there was a JQ document that stated you weren't to earn the J SC for ODU (in retrospect though people have been most of the time).

I have the same recollection but cannot find the reference either.

b) Call centre (Call outs only – Not for inbound calls)

Passengers upgraded to StarClass through Jetstar Reservations will be entitled to the following
benefits:

Upgraded passengers will be offered:
•
All meals, drinks, comfort packs and VOD’s as per the normal StarClass in-flight offering

•
The Star Class Baggage allowance.

•
Lounge access

•
The ability to earn Frequent Flyer points based on a StarClass rate (QF Business rate
equivalent = 1.25 points per mile)

Upgraded passengers will
NOT be offered:

•
Refunds on pre-purchased in-flight products purchased as part of their economy fare. This
will not be offered due to the special upgrade price.

The fare is changing to a StarClass promotional fare and the applicable fare conditions apply. This

fare is strictly non refundable. The fare class passengers will be booked into is DX.

Basically there are internal policies and policies avail to everyone.

The external policy advises that ALL starclass fares earn J SC's/Points as does the internal policy as above.

But OT, if an airline ever states that something is an internal policy, this cannot be legally binding. An 'enforcable' policy has to be stated to the public and be accessable to the public.
