I wrote to Qantas on Tuesday and said they have acted in a way that is misleading and deceptive and I would like a refund on my Qantas Club membership as a result of this change.

They called me the next day and said that they would refund my membership. I can only take this to mean they acknowledge they have acted misleadingly and deceptively.

I encourage you all do to the same - this is pathetic.

This member Joshat, post #138 in the T5 galleries thread seemed to indicate he was offered a refund...

He only had 1 post against his name, and joined in 2010...

Tell me about it. Guess who was the silly one who paid for a 2 year renewal 6 months before qualifying to Platinum?
We are in the same boat - Mr FM and I took out 4 year memberships when we dropped from Gold to Silver and now I have 1 year and 3 months on hold and Mr FM has 2 years and 3 months. Unless Qantas deteriorates further and we swap airlines, we will probably keep either Gold or Plat until we both achieve LTG, so it was an expensive exercise - serves me right for thinking 4 years was a more cost effective option......

I bought a 2-year membership when the joining fee was waived 13 months ago. At that time, I was thinking I would still be flying around over the next couple of years, so I took the 2-year option instead of the 1-year. And I certainly did fly around... became a self-funded SG today. :D

Nice, i think i will join, then once i hit gold in May, i will have it on hold :)... they better not change the rules.......

Joined just now, been thinking about it too much its driving me crazy LOL.....

This seems to be a magnificent way to get a lot of FF points very cheaply (which I am somewhat in need of at the moment).

My family consists of WP1, WP and WP (so we all have lounge access anyway), but have any WPs or SGs out there tried to apply for this?

Family transfer?
Already done within the last 12 months.

I did consider joining up lots of family members (eg FidoD, SpotD) but then rationality prevailed - I'll just buy up a heap of vouchers instead @ 10 points per $. At least that way, no $ will be sacrificed in the process to get the points.

i'm not too proud for some charity

I'm certainly up for points, but the $ to point ratio is not quite there.

think I'll wait for another ANZ plat offer

The gift voucher offer is better at $400 and you get to use the $400 again!

Agreed upon sombre analysis

QC Offer - join family member (to FF + QC) - cost $82.50 + $840.00
40,000 points for $922.50 = 2.3 cents per point
no additional benefit apart from QC access + CC points

Gift Voucher Offer
40,000 points for (eg) 40 x $100 gift vouchers
then the points from $4000 worth of travel AND no CC charges for the flights
40 x MEL-SYD = 40,000 points base + double that for WP
120,000 points for $4000 = 3.3 cents per point
plus the travel
plus the CC points from a $4000 spend.

Since most of my travel is reimbursed by whomever I am working for at the time, it's sensible for me to go down the voucher route.

Or use an overseas address (ex NZ) where membership is free, or is woolworths still giving away free membership via its everyday rewards program?

Just be careful of the following conditions:

1. can only use 1 voucher per booking
2. voucher only applies to base fare and not the taxes which must be paid for separately to the voucher
3. voucher can only be used once and any remaining value is forfeited
4. 12 month validity.

its not as rosy as it seems but if you can make it work for you, then you're onto a good thing.

Airline lounge membership is tax deductible, and hence depending on your income, the price per point for this offer is somewhat less than the previously quoted 2.1c/point - for most of us it is probably closer to one cent.

Only thing is that I was once a (corporate) member of QP and I let my membership lapse in 2009, do I still qualify for the bonus points if I rejoin?
