Joyce: Qantas perth had to go

Qantas has failed us for flying internationally out of Perth and I hear they are getting small passenger loads between Sydney and London. Muffing the Singapore connection to London was a big mistake.

Yeah I agree. Looking back, they should have kept at least one flight on the BA code share / or stopover in SIN.
So i) ex-PER to SIN could conceivably continue and won't be all lost to EK and ii) keep some QF pax who have otherwise gone to BA / CX now...

I just booked PER - SIN traveling in early July for under $300 per person one way! It's no wonder they can't make money!
SQ are charging more than double that.

That's a one way fare...

Looking back, flights out of PER were never given a proper chance. Does anyone remember PER-NRT? Where else would QFi run a ****ty 767 with no entertainment on demand on a route which is 10+ hours? Never given a chance.

Add to that the chopping and changing of the PER-HKG timings. I don't think the CX170/171 timings have changed for a while (give or take the 5/10 minute adjustments perhaps).

The main issue IMO is QF have never put their best foot forward with multiple connections and really strived to OWN a route.

If you fly old outdated aircraft with relatively bad times with no connections, then charge top dollar, then turn around after a few months to throw your hands in the air 'well that didn't work sorry' well of course!

But then the SIN-PER one way fare (assuming you want to come back) is around the same price.

Rather more interesting is if you book it as a return using two one way bookings PER-SIN is AUD$279 + SIN-PER SGD$307 the total is approx AUD$550 + CC fine, whereas to book as a return PER-SIN-PER is PER-SIN AUD$442 + SIN-PER AUD$411 = AUD$853 + CC fine.

Have just looked at a dummy booking for a 4-6 July long weekend.

Joyce may say Perth had to go, but he's quoted in today's West Australian talking up the activity and growth here, including the advantages of it's proximity to Asia.

Draw your own conclusions.

Yesssss. Exactly. This is why I doubt it was ever Joyce's strategy for QFi PER operations to succeed. It is so glaringly obvious that connections and frequency are major factors in the viability of routes. I fail to see how someone with his experience would not have implemented improvements to connections at least before canning routes, if he really wanted them to work. That's why I think he has had QFi PER's fleet and capital earmarked for other projects (such as his little pet, Sh!tStar) from the get-go.

Joyce sucks cough, and most of us agree he needs to go. What I'd like to see is a thread on who we'd like to replace him. A sort of crowd sourced recruitment think tank for the top job.

Just flew PER-SIN on Monday and returned last night. Monday was only half full in Y but last night was only a handful of seats empty in Y. By comparison colleagues flew SQ at same times and found similar story with them, so its not just QF loads. If SQ can make it work why not QF?
There is only a short window of time to see if Emirates or BA takes QF's place. I dont know anyone at work that is going to fly 3K to SIN from PER going forward (certainly not going to take the JQ flight via DPS). So will maintain my WP status for this year, but already working on plans to switch over to *A next year - which means i stop fly QF domestically as well.

I was on that flight. It was pretty average service in my opinion.

Forty-five minutes before landing I went to the rear galley to ask if there was going to be a snack service. The lovely flight attendant, comfortably enjoying a magazine and a cup of tea in her seat, said "No, not on short sectors" to which I said "So, we get one on the way up to Singapore on a flight that's the same duration and distance and we get one from Sydney to Perth which is a longer duration, but not on this sector?" She simply repeated her earlier comment to which I said "Hard to believe Qantas couldn't make it work. More than the absence of a snack (which, I might add, on the way up was two dry crackers and the tiny pack of cheese) on a five hour international flight on "One of the world's great airlines" I was more struck by what others often speak of: the only thing consistent about Qantas is its inconsistency.

Anyway, before I left the Singapore lounge I let Qantas know about my disappointment with the Perth situation - courtesy their fancy postcard app:

I did that flight back in 1999 on a school exchange to Japan!

Was an awful and boring flight!!! Luckily the outbound left late at night so you were able to sleep a good 7 hours!

Haha hilarious! Class of '99? Brings back memories.. I'm a 99er. :)
Seriously though.. it's a joke that we either have to go via the East Coast or risk frequently missed connections with JQi to get to Japan.. there was a lot that could have been done before that route was canned.. just like the SIN and HKG routes. Now we have no real choice but to pay a premium with CX or SQ.

I wonder what would have happen, had Joyce been successful in establishing an airline in Asia, to QFi ex Perth.

Many of mates, who are regular travelers to China, gave away QF a long time ago because of poor frequencies and departure/arrival time.

I find it amazing danger that QF deem SIN-PER too short for a snack service when MH can do it on a KUL-SIN sector.
