Whilst Qantas domestic is killing the pig with all the flights to mining towns ...... Qantas International cant make a profit from Perth..... surely some analysis of less frequent flights could have worked?
Good comment

How many QFi flights are not daily or near daily.
Jakarta is about all I can think of.
To get business traffic you need the frequency to provide the flexibility

QF19/20 SYD-MNL and QF27/28 SYD-SCL are 4xweekly.
QF3/4 SYD-HNL is 3xweekly.

BA 747 to PER? What was the route?

PER-xSIN-LHR. It was effectively a QF PER-LHR service. Flew it many times when I was still working, so it was in whY :(.

It was my first introduction to the window seat behind the exit row (29A,K) where the exit row did not have a A or K seat - like 80A,K on the QF A380s. Managed to snare it many times . So, for someone locked into whY, it was better than if QF had put a B747 service on that route :D.

part of the problem is on international flights there is a lot of competition. Singapore Airlines taking those passengers who want to pay more, who want to travel further than Singapore and Scoot, AirAsia and Jetstar taking the budget passengers.

Qantas could have made things work but it was just too hard, easier to blame someone else for their troubles.

Just a thought:
Qantas has clearly said that its seasonal service between Perth and Auckland was made possible by using A330 aircraft which usually sit idle in Perth all weekend. Why couldn't one of those A330s do a couple of Perth-Singapore flights each weekend, which just happens to be the most popular time of the week to fly between Australia and Asia? They wouldn't need any more aircraft as they are already in Perth earning nothing. They could either run it as a standalone 2x weekly service (the same as with AKL) or they could even use their newer 737-800s to fill the gap during the week, when demand would appear to be lower. Surely that would be better than nothing, while being a good utilisation of aircraft and at the same time earning back a bit of reputation in Perth.

What's the flying time Perth - singapore? Sounds like a really sensible use of qantas metal. They don't make any money just sitting on the tarmac Mr Joyce.

The flying time is just over 5 hours each way, so an aircraft could very comfortably do a day trip or even a half-day trip with a quick turnaround in SIN.

Definitely a good use of an aircraft. We did briz-Singapore just for Easter and it was a delightful trip. 5 hours would be so much easier

They don't make any money just sitting on the tarmac Mr Joyce.

But, they lose less money sitting on the tarmac if the variable costs of operating the flight (crew, ground staff, fuel, QP booze, inflight catering etc) are more than the revenue earnt for the flight.

and scheduling a 3K flight at roughly the same time as the morning QF departure did a lot to ensure the Y cabin on the QF plane was sparsely populated.
Interestingly exSIN there were days when I found 3K to be more expensive than QF. Noe: all my JQ/3K flights have been intra Asia.

For our fellow comrades in Qantas fully service states (NSW< QLD< VIC) are you aware how pathetic Qantas is in Perth, you cant fly business class to Bali.

Actually same with the MEL route, Sometimes dearer ex SIN on JQ than QF. It also puzzles me why they have more or less the same schedule as well on JQ and QF in both directions, why not offer a bit more choice in timings, after all SQ has 4x flights a day with good spacing of timings.

Wow. You guys have it really bad in the west.

i know we are the most isolated capital in the world..... but our national carrier lets us down big time.

I don't get it. So much wealth in the west. So many FiFo and you have such cough services...Joyce should be aiming up and providing more rather than less services to and from the west. When does his contract expire?

IMO we have to fly through east coast to go to the US, why cant Qantas route some or all flights to Asia through Perth. If I want to fly Singapore / Hong Kong from Perth I can't with Qantas. You really want to see how Qantas is killing the pig in WA, look at the price of a flight Perth - Port Hedland or Perth - Newman. Both flights are less than 2 hours and generally speaking 90% full

Cairns to horn island( closest port to Torres Strait) in the same expense bracket. Love a monopoly. Virgin looking at pulling out of briz base because it can't access some of the more profitable Qantaslink 'coal/gas' runs. Sabre rattling of course but you never know in these current economic times.. Any excuse

True. There's no reason they would have to schedule any new flights at the same time as current 3K flights, e.g. One could be an early morning (~8am) departure and one could be a midday departure from PER.
