Joyce - 'We Could Go Under'

Hyperbole...

Unless Etihad owns 100% of Virgin which I think is unlikely with Branson at 26% and AirNZ at 20% -- it can't run Virgin Australia at a loss - it will merely be a minority shareholder in an ASX listed company....

Singapore Airline and Tiger Australia... thats another story.

Gee, has this man ever had a positive thing to say about the company he is supposed to run? He doesn't have some sort of "We will give you $5m in shares at the end of your tenure" clause in his contract does he (in a similar agreement to Mr Trujillo and Telstra)?

Thank god he's found someone else to blame! ... again.

Im surprised, noone retorted back to him "Or, You could go over"..

We've really got to decide as a nation our approach to the whole global trade 'level playing field' notion that we embraced several decades ago. Doing things piecemeal just creates a dogs breakfast that no-one can understand and a game that no-one in their right mind would want to play.

We seem to have generally embraced deregulation and removed most protectionism, so, given the rules of the game we've created I can't see that QF has any legs to stand on. What they are really asking for is a reprieve of the potential for fierce competition so that they may continue to milk the domestic cow (us!). Why would Etihad subsidise local domestic travel over the longer term? There will never be a 'pay day' - as even if QF did go under, another world player would pop up and the cash drain via their largess would never end.

In almost every other industry I can think of, cheap or subsidised goods and services from elsewhere have essentially open access and where that access wipes out local industry we just grin and bear it with the mantra that industry needs to be competitive on the world stage. I think that the QF sale act needs to be removed, QF can't be a 'bit pregnant', its either a state owned and operated entity or its public.

Squeaky wheel gets the oil;)

The Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce is backing Qantas. He does not support changing the act but believes investment by state-owned enterprises needs to be checked.
''It's not a case of being xenophobic; it's a case of recognising reality,'' he told the Herald.

These blokes will be in power soon.

Is there anybody in world aviation that looks/talks favourably about dealing with Alan Joyce..........seriously is there anyone?
AJ wouldn't find a partner at sidekicks convention.
Quiz: Which 1 of the following groups (no prizes for guessing) would say anything positive about AJ :

A. Other Airline heads?
B. Qantas/Jetstar employees
C. The Australian Government
D. The general public
E. QAN shareholders
F. His Financial Planner

Ahem.. did anyone notice that Air New Zealand (a state owned enterprise when last i looked) had acquired 20% of VA without a peep? No, not xenophobic at all.

FWIW i think those elements of Qantas sale act that restrict it's ownership over above that which applies to any other Australian airline should go. I also think it will make bugger all difference to the performance of current Qantas management.

If the act was repealed perhaps it would mean a quick buy-out by a suitor at the current rock bottom price! The board would have to be for the chop quickly after that?

You'd think so. It would increase the price of the smoking ruins if nothing else.

Boo-freaking-hoo Alan. You whine about life as much as Gerry Harvey.

If your product is better than Virgin's you will have nothing to worry about.

If Emirates bought 10% of Qantas I doubt John Borgetti would make the same complaint.

The Qantas share price nosedived recently when it forecast a $450 million loss on international routes this financial year. It says much of the reason it is losing money abroad is because it is being undercut by state-owned airlines such as Etihad, Emirates and Singapore Airlines.

From the pricing I have seen, QF and these 3 have similar pricing and similar times to Europe.

There are other factors then just pricing of why people are choosing other airlines. The 3 mentioned have very good on board service and fly to airports other then LHR and FRA.

How many airlines has Etihad bought into now? I now they have taken a stake in Airberlin (OW), any others?

Air Seychelles, VA, Aer Lingus. Frankly i think it's a clever strategy from their end - get airlines with a strong local base to feed their long haul network. It is not and has never been a strategy about killing off domestic competitors in those markets and AJ is deluding himself if he really thinks the grand plan is for Etihad to sink huge amounts of cash into a domestic price war between VA ana Qantas.

Very, very true... they're a good pair with their collective whining.

My conclusion is that they are both "yesterday's men"...

Wonder if this is anything to do with Emirates being interested in the Australian market as well.

Maybe Alan could start starring in Qantas ads. That might save a bit of money.

"Let me do it right for you!" Wait, wrong campaign!

Alan Joyce - the NEW "little doer". Well, I'm sure there's more than a few people who would like to see him rolled up in a piece of carpet. :)

I think Joyce is essentially correct on one major matter here, the Qantas sales act has to go or be amended significantly.

I agree. Would also add to the list - union busting action that he dropped on FWA.
