Last QantasLink 717 service

So much for the 'last' 717 service.

VH-YQW has apparently been reactivated and will soon ferry to Perth where it will be based temporarily.

Rumours are this is to recover the Network Aviation schedule which has been in shambles recently due to persistent issues with the Fokker fleet.

Meanwhile, VH-YQS has departed Australia.

Yes. It's landed Perth.

Assume there are still some QLink pilots based on Perth, presumably pulled back from undertaking conversion training to a new type ?

Operating Perth to Paraburdoo flights from tomorrow.

Some speculation it could be operating out of Perth for the rest of November.
Wonder if it will do my Geraldton flight on Sunday PM!!

One has to wonder operationally whats gone on here...
1. We saw them operate "the last flight" with posters, branding, announcements to match. When was the call made to continue 717 flights?
2. The 717 hasn't been operating around WA so where are the crew from?
3. It's a 110 seat aircraft that's slightly more then the Fokker 100 so I'm guessing thats the fill in?
4. Wasn't these aircraft being sold off for operation by a US carrier, if so has that being delayed?

Oh boy
So what happened to all the Pilots? The A220 fleet is tiny compared to the 717 fleet.

Are they just waiting around for the A220 or have they gone to other parts in the group, ie Mainline Qantas?
It appears there is a substantial number of employed 717 crews who have not yet done a220 training and indeed don’t have it booked. There are also those who have done the ground school but not the line training part. Rumour has it they were essentially to sit at home on ?paid or unpaid leave until….

Until the above happened. Although, while the Fokker fleet has engineering issues, as too does the A320 fleet, the schedules are reasonably light over there and my contacts are somewhat confused by the 717 plan. I suppose it makes a degree of sense to have an operational spare of sorts if you’re paying the crews anyway

Negative- Perth closed as a 717 base either just before or just after COVID. AIUI most crew transferred to Canberra. There may be some commuters, maybe

Let me know if you hear anything, I might get to make my trip after all!!

Rumour has it this remaining frame was not part of the delta deal but going to an aviation engineering training school in Perth

Ps, the rumoured F100 replacement is E190s, but network are currently in EBA negotiations so Qantas have been tight lipped. That said, there was a leaked page of the EBA where the payscales listed “F100/E190” so it seems reasonable. No I don’t know what this means for alliance

Oh no!

Ok make that another two jets I haven’t flown on! The one you mention (which I have seen pictures of) and also the Comet.

My list isn’t looking so impressive now! :(
This just popped up yesterday on YouTube. It has some nice film of the VFW 614 in flight and a potted history of its development and failure.

The Tassie Devil might get renamed John Farnham if it keeps up the flying! Must be a weird experience for the crew going from twiddling their thumbs in Canberra for weeks to suddenly have to get to Perth in a hurry.
Change to my previous, I believe it is Sydney based crews that have been sent across
