Latest information about 28 degrees card

I note Latitude are removing the ability to use the 28° web site to pay by direct debit from a bank account from June 7th.

One needs to register with the "Latitude Service Centre". Hopefully it will continue to be fee free.

I have found one thing - you cannot make a payment (e.g. put a positive balance into your card) if you don't owe them any money.
For bank account payments after 6 June, you'll need to do the following at least 5 business days ahead of your due date:

1. Access Pay my Account on the Latitude Service Centre to start making a payment for the first time

2. Complete the verification process for your bank account:

We will initiate two different small deposits to your nominated bank account. It will take 2 business days for you to receive these small deposits, depending on your bank/financial institution. Once you receive them, you need to input them to verify the bank account is yours.

So how do you pay card off without a fee? The BPAY fee has been around a while too.

I apologise, I managed to delete a part about this - I have updated my post.

There is no mention of fees using this new method and I am hoping there won't be.

I got the email but I’m confused by the changes… the ‘pay my account now’ will be going? (the one where you just enter the amount you wish to pay and it pulls it out of your nominated account)

Or is it just direct debit going? (as in auto pays the full balance each month)

I agree it’s confusing. I think the 28 degrees login is ceasing and you need to login via Latitude, with new login details.

Thanks for the replies… I guess I’ll sign up for the new thing and see how it goes… i’ve got a few weeks before due date to work it out!

Maybe it's just me, but I can't think of any other bank that makes it this difficult to pay your credit card bill without paying extra fees. It's personally a huge turn-off for using this card.

I keep my card open for the Boingo wifi and flight delay pass benefits, since there is no annual fee, but I now rarely use this for actual purchases.

That's a reason why they are languishing at that level.

I only have the card for OS trips, of which in pre-covid times might be twice a year. No annual card fees, no fx fees, and as I pay it off in full after returning maybe 2x$0.95 BPay fees p.a. The Bankwest QF card is my main card for travel, and this one is a backup. So will keep it as my backup for now.

I have a DD setup for the monthly balance. No fee charged.

I also only use it for foreign currency purchases. The occasional Boingo wifi but they seem to be less common on my last trip.

the only reason i am keeping this is the Delayed flights lounge access. (it works, i scored it once), its good for a backup, and Latitude does seem to be keen to add innovative features.

No fee cards are dime a dozen now, so that feature alone is nothing special anymore.

When I was in Thailand recently I was trying to book flights on Nok Air and it would not accept 28 Degrees after putting in authentication received via SMS. Tried a few times without success.

Called 28 Degrees and they are saying the transaction is not hitting their systems so someone in the middle is blocking transaction? Anyway used ANZ Visa which was more expensive.

A week or so later booked flights on Air Asia and 28 Degrees was accepted without issue.

Fast forward to last night and I tried to book Air Asia flight using 28 Degrees. Got the authentication SMS and after inputting the code there was notification that card not accepted. Tried a few times without success. Ended up paying with Virgin Money Visa.

I think they use Verified by Visa? Is that what's blocking my 28 Degrees card? Anyone else experience similar?

I'm not sure @serfty. I cannot use 28 Degrees to purchase these flights and 28 Degrees doesn't know why. Air Asia customer care is not existent.

I noticed charge on Virgin Money in AUD as quoted by Air Asia. Interesting to see if there's a foreign currency exchange fee.

I had trouble making US hotel bookings on the Marriott Bonvoy website using the 28 Degrees card so had to use another card for the guarantees and then change the payment method on the Bonvoy app later.

I had a couple of random issues with 28° when in the UK recently. 99% of the time tap and go fine. But one or two places just didn’t want to work. A really weird one was the Dartmouth ferry - the authorisation appeared on my phone app straight away but the transaction was declined.

In each case, I just used my ING Visa debit.

That ferry authorisation hung around for at least 3 wks before dropping off.

I have experienced similar with probably every card/bank i ever had, and at least once on every trip. Its not worth wondering about, and calls to the bank usually result in a "we didnt get an authorisation request"

I always carry a pocketful of debit and credit cards when travelling overseas, at least 6. You never know when something isnt going to work - or gets lost.
