Thanks for the Trip Report @Keith009; most informative.

Did you do anything about travel insurance? I realise that being part of NSW/Australia then you are covered by medicare, etc. but not sure whether a medical evacuation would be covered and a cancelled flight due to bad weather could prove expensive.

We were comfortable with the level of coverage provided by the AMEX Explorer card's complimentary travel insurance policy so relied on that. We'd normally take out a retail policy for overseas travel, but between the allowances for delays/cancellations and emergencies and Medicare we were more than happy with the provisions of the complimentary cover.

Booked our QF award flights MEL-LDH-MEL today only 48K QFF points + $496 QF fees and taxes all up for the 2 of us in Oct next year

I was quite surprised that there is actually a large amount of QF Award availability to LDH for much of next year

Never been to Lord Howe Island before and had booked in DEC 2019 when QF advertised Award bookings (for a limited time) on every flight to LDH - but out trip was cancelled  this year due to Covid

We're booked for another trip in Oct 2021 too! We were going to visit Mudgee but as soon as I saw 2 Award seats to LDH available I booked without a second thought. 32k Points + $384 for the pair of us SYD-LDH-SYD. In fact avails are great throughout Oct. Realistically we're less likely to visit LDH when overseas borders re-open so 'making the most of it' (if you can call it that) when we have nowhere else as amazing to get to haha.
