Loss of Points. Advice please.

After all, they are FREQENT Flyer Points, not Occasional Flyer Points.

Agree with most of your post bar this part. Points are points, whether you fly every week, month or year. You can acrue FF points without stepping foot on a plane so the fact the word "frequent" is in the title is fairly meaningless.

Feel for those losing points, would hurt more tbh because it is quite easy to add some points to your account if you don't fly often. 18 months seems tight from a premium airline program in my opinion but it's a great liability deduction.

Many thanks everybody for your replies.

First of all, it has not been my intention to "throw in a grenade and run". I only wanted information on if there is a method to get my points re-instated.

Some history;

For the last twenty or so years, I have flown domestic (every two weeks) and international (every year) during the course of my business.

When Ansett collapsed I lost over 300,000 points however, I did manage to redeem quite a few points before that happened.

I immediately joined the Qantas f/f progamme and have been a member since 2002.

When I joined, it was stated that activity had to occur within three years. This was no problem for me at the time due to my ongoing flights.

The gaolposts were changed later (not sure when) to two years and that points accumulated up to that time were to stay perpetually.

Since then, the goalposts have been changed again back to 18 months.

I retired just over two years ago, hence activity was greatly reduced except for three return flights Per/PH. taken early 2012. Just over eighteen months ago.

The accumulated points were to be used for overseas travel in the new year. (2014)

Perth/Broome flight return.

This was booked in August 2013 for flights early November 2013.

This was paid for by credit card via the frequent flyer website quoting my membership number. If I had been aware of the potential loss of my points, I most certainly would have redeemed some.

It was when I returned from Broome and opened my activity statement that I realised that my points had been cancelled.

I am sorry, but QF made no effort to hide the fact they were changing the terms from 3 years to 18 months. This was done some ~3 years ago. They definitely did not sneak this in.

You mention your flights tend to be out of PER - with this in mind why not use an everyday rewards card once in a while, as that is an easy way to ensure your account stays active.

Good luck, but you aren't going to get your points back legal action or not.

Was this PER-BME flight an award redemption?

Actually, scrap that, the use of the term "Frequent Flyer Website" is probably generic for Qantas.com and you flew just a few days after the points were 'expired'.

Ouch!

FWIW, Have you had any car hire or hotel stays in the last few months that may have generated QFF point earn (that have not been credited elsewhere)?

Negative on that one, Serfty.

"Points in your account at 30 June 2010 won't expire any earlier as a result of this change"

There is the rub. Points accumulated at ths date should not have expired. Or am I not reading this right.

TDU
With the three year expiry rule that existed until that date, such points in an account without any activity since would have expired 5 months and 3 days ago (to the date of this post).

It means that points accumulated before this change would retain their three year expiry date which was the old non-use expiry period.

Actually that is something with AA, every email I get from them has something about when points will expire without further activity.
Virgin Atlantic is another that clearly shows when miles will expire in 3 years time. I cannot see this on the Qantas statement anywhere.

In my opinion airlines such as Delta have it right with no expiry of miles. Not everyone flies regularly and some programs such as SQ KrisFlyer miles have to be used ~3 years after earning which in a lot of cases is nowhere near enough for an award redemption.

Many thanks people for your input and comments.

I am now reconsiled to the fact that my points are lost.

So. I will now cut up my Qantas F/F card and never willingly step into a Qantas aircraft again. Perhaps I might even send the remains to Mr Joyce.

Is the opposition (Velocity) any better?

QF really should offer to reinstate points for a fee - could be a nice money spinner, Asia Miles do it - although at 40USD for 2000 points it might hurt a little!!!

Virgin points expire as well, so I guess you won't be using them either.

Qantas won't mind if you haven't stepped foot on one of their planes in that long already.

IMHO, it's really not worth while blaming a company for enforcing rules you agreed to (and were notified about changes to). The error here falls on you not being aware of changes, or not keeping up to date.

Ignorance on something is no excuse to blame someone else.

It would cost them money to give them back so why would they care ? If anything they'd care less now.
