I can relate to that, having travelled MEL-PER-MEL on JQ recently.Pulled my bag out of the Jetstar crammed overhead bin after top of climb to the pull out some other bag which landed on some cranky old Biatch in the seat ahead of me. Sadly it was a Karen which didn’t help the situation. It was one of those flights in which I then became the enemy of everyone and got death stares galore for 3 hours. Cabin crew being way over the top with her afterwards, on which was really a small tap, didn’t help my situation either lol.
The overheads were hugely overpacked, with each subsequent pax rearranging the space as they tried to stuff their bags into the crowded space.
So your experience seems almost inevitable IMHO. Sitting in row 1, I had to retrieve my carry-on from the overhead, and it was extremely difficult to prevent something falling out. I think I might have just managed it, but I did get a lot of dirty looks.
So while I do sympathize with your situation, I'm not sure if the woman who had a bag fall on her (through no fault of her own) should be demonized. If it had happened to me, I'd be somewhat p'ssed off, and possibly injured too.
