Which is why I do my shopping in the States-cheaper,more larger sizes and very likely the assistant is slightly to the larger size.plus they are usually on commission so do tend to be more helpful.

I'm one of those types that finds a brand and sticks too it. Currently Rodd and Gunn.

But I hate sales. It makes me loose confidence in any value of the brand. Is it just me, or if a brand said we sell at a fair price all year round, they would get more purchases year round. Happy for genuine sales to clear those items that missed the mark or clear those sizes on the edges. Would certainly remove my decision inertia as a male who hates buying clothes.

I'm normal height and approximately normal in size/weight for my age (well it has been consistent for ten years). But I have a transitional vertebrae, as in extra. So my head tends to hit the ceiling of the car when driving unless the seat is lowered/reclined. Makes for an interesting exercise in the acquisition of clothes as shirts tend to be too short and trousers too long.

Anyway, I started purchasing clothes in Bangkok in 1979. While my purchases have seriously declined in number, I do occasionally splurge and the denim jeans actually fit and are no more (and mostly less) than I would have to pay in Australia. The tailor's sons now run the shop. Probably not the cheapest shop but have been treated fairly well.

Think about it if you can convince yourself that you will remain roughly the same size for a few years....

I'm with cove for much of my apparel; JCPenny et al in the USA can be relatively inexpensive with a few easily obtained discount vouchers.

Other than that I keep an eye out for Aldi special buys and general sales.

Seems there is a marketing peg here seeking a hole..
Quality clothing with a large range of styles shoppable online with your preset size preferences.
The high volume , high margin market is for fashion chasing millenials , old baby boomers and their younger iterations don't spend enough.

I struggle with the same old bunch of brands and agree that Gazman seems the best of the bunch in terms of quality -v- price.
R&G seem to be off the pace after some stellar products and Sportcraft is making rubbish.

Balefully surveying a pair of cheap looking Sportscraft cord slacks as cool trip packing prospects ;I dug out of a box a pair of stretch cord slacks at least 20 years old.
They are high quality , full cut and super comfortable..and I get to make an alternate fashion statement.. whats not to like… in the case they go...

I spent a long day on my own in SF a year or so back determined to build up my wardrobe and came away almost empty handed.

Shopping for clothes in Australia makes little sense. Everything is overpriced. Couple of visits each year to some outlets in Europe or USA can be not only time saving (I hate shopping too) but also cost effective.

I did get 6 pairs of Club shorts for $84 including tax at Macy's sale the other day so I won't need to go shopping for shorts for a while.

When we go shopping for Ron I take him to RM Williams for pants/jeans and in the US Brooks Bros for shirts, in BKK for Jim Thompson fine cotton polos ( they wash beautifully !)

I find that SOOOO annoying ! And usually it say it in very small letters. I have discovered that on a couple of occasions, having bought Ron shirts and then seeing it is a slim fit when we get home. Luckily I then give it to our son !

If you are near Melbourne this weekend - Thursday to Saturday - the Salco Warehouse sale is on. salco.com.au
Gant, Abelard, Geoffrey Beene, Jeff Banks etc. Plenty of L to XXL.
I go down every couple of years & stock up on Gant - linen & cotton shirts, trousers & Gant jeans. Last year I got a Gant casual jacket for $50 rrp $275. Quality ladies wear as well & other stuff like belts, wallets & cufflinks $10 to $15.
Savings will more than pay for a good weekend in Melbourne to watch the Storm play, I think the Rabbits this weekend.

If you're looking for a bigger range of sizes, may I suggest the following outlets for blokes:

TM Lewin has a great range of collar and sleeve sizes, in "regular" sizing, as well as the wretched slim-fits (which are great for 19 year olds but not this middle aged deadbeat dad). Quality's gone downhill over the last decade but still great meeting point of price and quality.

If you have wide feet like I do, buy Tambo (comfort) sized RM Williams boots, and New Balance sneakers - they also have a fashion sneaker range (even though I think the idea is ludicrous. Trainers/sneakers are for sport only).

I recommend for jumpers, jerseys, jeans and chinos a great mail-order outlet called RB Sellars - they also have three shopfronts in regional Australia. Great range of sizes. A bit like what RM Williams was like clothes-wise before LVMH bought them, I guess.

If you're looking for off-the-rack suiting for bigger or shorter blokes, I recommend Anthony Squires. If you don't like OTR, I suggest trying one of the new breed of made-to-measure tailors around Sydney and Melbourne that measure you up in a fancy-pants CBD shop (and offer you a drink while they do it), then get it made in HK/China/Japan. Think of it as being like going to Sam's in HK, but without the trip (which to AFFers is heresy, but it is a little more convenient). Turnaround is 4-6 weeks. I like Oscar Hunt - others include MJ Bale, InStitchu and George&King.

To comply with the topic requiring a rant, Im going to rant. There is too may brand names!!!!!. Why cant there be a one stop shop. Somewhere where I can buy everything including engine oil. If only Costco......

Poor service is fairly par for the course in much of Australian retail these days although you sometimes find a few gems who are actually knowledgable and go out of their way to help.

That being said I avoid shopping these days and prefer to commission my clothing and footwear from tailors and cobblers as required. That way I guarantee fit and exercise greater control over quality.
