Interested in people's must do in Malta.

I've reviewed a few TR but if anyone has anything to add I'd be interested.

Someone maybe two or three years ago mentioned some nice apartments in an old building. If anyone remembers that I'd be grateful

@MARTINE @RooFlyer @Flashback

We just visited Malta as a cruise stop and had no expectations. We loved it and thought about a land trip. Son and DIL stayed there in an apartment maybe a year ago, in the seaside area and enjoyed it. It does get very hot. Pick your timing. They went in November and it was sunny but not too hot. We went in July and it was hot.

I’m hoping to be there very soon. Last minute trip planning

If you are going soon it will be Winter by local standards, I was there in Feb and found a few things closed, especially the boat tours and summer/beachy things. Didnt actually go swimming.

There is a church for every day of the year, lots of old ruins and temples, lots of history Knights of St John etc, lots of WW2 history, underground caves where they sheltered etc.
You can easily spend 4 or 5 days seeing things.
Do some reading before you go and you will understand things more.

Buses go everywhere and ferries go between the islands as well, also lots of tours who pick you up and drop you off. The main island is only 30kms around so wouldnt bother hiring a car.

@Princess Fiona has been there fairly recently.

Walking around Valetta is easy and rewarding. You've see my Trip Report and especially 'Sunday in Scotland' chocolate shop. That's all you are really going for, isn't it? :)

A boat tour around Valetta Harbour.

The 'hop-on-hop-off' bus that takes you around the major sights of the main island. Needs booking but pretty simple IIRC.

I would have loved to visit Gozo (check out how to pronounce it correctly!) to visit the neolithic Ggantija Temples there.

Of course I'm only going for the hot chocolate and it will be cold so I can enjoy it - not like Adelaide this week

So, I just had a look at my TR on Malta. Conclusion :"Must go back!"

As it happens, I have a window of 6 days at the end of June, when I'm in France, after a cruise. I only want to go to Gozo, so currently am thinking of flying CDG - MLA on Air France, get the fast ferry from Valetta to Mgarr (Gozo), stay a night or two, then go back, probably another night in Valetta. Ideally fly back to Marseille, if I can talk myself into flying Ryanair.

I'm sure you've already found:

I was thinking maybe 5-7 days in Malta - I don't really want to be rushing. I want to see the sights but also have a bit of time sitting on a balcony looking over the sea reading my book and sipping a wine or coughtail or two

Just looking at flights CDG-MLA

Only direct flight is operated by KM Air Malta. Air France code-shares it.

Outbound, late June: The cheapest business fare on Air France is A$685. Same flight, the most expensive (most flexible) business fare on KM Air Malta is A$437

Return late June: Cheapest AF A$685; most flexible KMAM A$351

A$1,370 vs A$788

On advantage of off season is I booked those Temples the day before.
That Ggganta one is usually heavily booked , it has limited numbers each day by UNESCO.

From memory my flight to Malta from London was only about 30 pounds each way as well. I remember being cranky as the train to Liverpool or somewhere cost me more a few days later.

Just re read my old diary of the Malta Trip, I got my temples mixed up, the Giganta one was not the hard to get into one it was the Hal Safiendi Hypogeum.
Although my trip was a fair while ago...things may have changed.

Other things to see were "The Pub", where Oliver Reed died while filming Gladiator and Fort St Elmo. One thing you cant see is the Azure Window as it has fallen down now.

Another note was nearly every Maltese I talked to had a relative in Australia, they all know Australia is an island so its gotta be like Malta...right? Everyone knows everyone.
When you try to explain I live as close to Uncle Whatsisname in Sydney as you do to Queen Elizabeth II in London they dont get it.
