Masks rules - Airline Enforcement?

I don't know that this is the correct thread for discussing it, but it's false to say that taking off one's mask for short periods somehow results in a guaranteed case of catching covid. Viral load makes a difference - It matters whether the infectious person is masked, how long each person takes their masks off for, how far away they are seated, whether they are talking loudly, all kinds of things impact the viral load. I tried to mitigate this when travelling by leaving my mask on when nearby passengers were eating, and ate my food later after they replaced their masks. Is this perfect? No, but this is not a game of perfection, it's an attempt to minimise risk wherever possible. We can't let perfection be the enemy of good - risk is a continuum and every step to reduce risk helps.

Declared unconstitutional by a Federal court judge in the US. Some airlines already making mask wearing optional.

I think we are a long way off that here. I get the impression that Andrews wants to ride out the entire of Winter with masks as they are today, going off his commentary last week (which proved very unpopular as expected)

I'll probably be in the bad books should I ask who would have appointed that judge? That sort of thing was a big topic in the US, not so long back. I'll just quietly google.

Anyway, my trip to the US and Canada in a couple of months time will probably encourage me to ensure mask wearing, given some of the passenger photos that are being circulated. 🤣

The thing is, mask wearing mostly offers protection to other people from the mask wearer. So the courageous mask dodgers are not saying "I don't care whether I get Covid", they are saying "I don't care whether you get Covid".

And they seem to be a bit too happy about that.

Maybe it's their right to be able to spread COVID. Probably in someone's version of the Constitution somewhere. 🤣

It's in your right to stay home if you don't like it... ;)

For context, all of the airline CEOs lobbied for the mandate to be removed before this ruling, and like here, the aviation industry is one of the last bastions of mask mandates - so it was getting increasingly harder to justify keeping it.

I've never understood the argument that aircraft and airports are inherently more risky than other settings.

Probably the big money talking (no, I didn't mean you. ;) )

Edit: Anyway, wasn't it one judge in Florida who said 'Off with their masks", or some such? I felt that such a decision was coming soon, just not this week.

That is because the worst thing that can happen with a pandemic is for the virus to spread from place to place. Airports and aeroplanes are places where people travelling between locations congregate. Contagion at an airport will spread far and wide.

But it's already everywhere...

Your point is valid for the earlier part of the pandemic - it doesn't make sense when every other industry has removed masks and covid is spreading everywhere with or without masks.

Some are not listening.

Great - glad I have helped you.

March 2020 just called, they would like their early stage pandemic responses back. Since March 2020 you may have noticed that Covid is everywhere, and has spread despite any and all travel restrictions, and we now have vaccines that are mostly effective/working, and the health system is prepared for any people who do have it. Isn't it getting stuffy underneath that doonah by now? :p

Oh but I have. You will never again be able to say this:

Now you will just be able to say that you believe this argument is not currently relevant.

I don't appreciate you taking my quote and using it out of context, but at least you can state that your point is not relevant.

Quoted in context mate. Own it.

Hence, referring to the current situation, with covid everywhere, aircraft and airports are no risker than other settings.

You clearly have an opinion that's different to mine, and that's fine, but don't try and twist my words because you don't like the way the argument is going.
