Mauritius, Madagascar & Seychelles

Thanks, Flashback.

Not sure which charter company the tour company will use. Should I ask them? Is MTA a good one? Are all charter flights OK - 2 to 3 hours seem to be long flights!

I think it is Tsaradia - a subs of Madagascar Airlines. The airline code is MD.
You'll generally be in a 4 seater, or an 8-11 seater Cessna Caravan. Cost wise MTA is one of the cheaper ones, planes are a bit older but well looked after. I flew with them a lot, they're reliable. They have a small lounge too.

Tour company said "We mainly use two companies. MTA and SKY Services. We had a record year with private flights last year and had excellent service from both. MTA is our go-to company."

I haven't used SKY (have used 3 different ones), but yes, MTA is the go-to.

The lounge:

Cessna 208 Caravan (likely bigger than what you'll fly on), I guess you'll be in a 4 seater.

MK seems to be a perfectly good airline. Some friends flew it, in J, a few years ago Per/Paris/Per and found the flights to be very pleasant. One of them is French born so that may have helped with any language problems.

They speak English perfectly fine!
I thought that they probably did but also thought that a pax talking them in excellent, 'old style 'French may have been a bonus. My friend was born in France but left in her late teens - around the early 1970's. When she goes there for a holiday she says that the locals love her word use as it is more 'classical' than most locals as she never picked up the various slang and Franglais words that have crept into modern French. Despite the best efforts of L'Académie française.

Indeed! I flown them a dozen or more times, starting back when they had 762s (with international first class!) and 747SPs. Always been positive (and no french required! :))

Looking forward to trying Air Mauritius J later this year.

Any Mauritius hotel recommendations?
We arrived Mauritius in the very early hours of today - 2am! Instead of 6pm, due to flight delayed / aircraft maintenance on one of MK aircraft. Good thing was that we got extra time to catch up with cove + Mrs cove 😀
The ‘Aspire’ lounge MK used at PER was uninspiring - meagre food.
The flight and service were very good and attentive. J cabin was full. Y looked like it was full as well. Food was ok - we are not foodie. We managed to shut eyes for a few hours plus a few more hours after hotel checkin at 3am.
It rained when we landed and it has been raining this morning.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Mon Tresor near the airport. Shuttle stopped running at 11:30pm so we took a taxi - Paid double what it should be but it was 2:30am. As IHG plat we booked the cheapest room and got upgraded to a nicer room. Comfortable bed. Good shower. No breakfast as expected. We will be back here for 3 nights after 14 days in Madagascar before flying back to PER then home.
Today we are going on a tour and get dropped off at the Westin for 3 nights. Was looking at the Hilton, intercontinental, Radisson but decided on the Westin for location and reasonable reviews.

Could we have a description/photo of seat (bed?) and what's there (power points, IFE etc), please?
The air mauritius one? It’s exactly the same as google images. It’s wide enough, but the seats hard up against the aisle are really bad… you literally feel like you are *in* the aisle. Row 1 is even worse, and no benefits like wider or longer footwells.

For a couple I would book two true window seats, even though they will be two rows apart.

The food is ‘ok’ as mentioned above. Out of PER is was maybe a 5.5. Out of Mauritius it was much better, maybe a 7.

IFE… BYO. It really is one of the worst.

Service is attentive, again as mentioned above.

Can recommend the Beach Club Pereybere. Small boutique hotel, very reasonable in price.

Otherwise the Villas Caroline in Flic en Flac. Again a boutique hotel.

For the big resorts… Royal Palm, La Pirogue, take your pick. Would avoid Bel Ombre.

The tricky thing is getting a beach that is (dead) coral and rock free and allows good swimming. Many of the hotels won’t show you the water directly in front of them… that usually means rocks and the like. Need to do research and cross-reference with pictures from other sources. Or tripadvisor.

The beaches around Grand Baie… Pereybere and the sting of beaches along that part of the island are considered some of the best for swimming, along with Blue Bay.

Finding a good restaurant can be hard. Most if not all of the resort hotels offer half board and nightly entertainment. There’s not much point trying to find something better outside.

Agree with MEL_Traveller about the J seats on MK. Did not take photos as requested by RooFlyer - maybe should have done. I was in 5A (aisle - a little bit exposed) and hubby was in 6A (more private as right next to windows). 7A is in front of toilet. We were initially hoping to arrive into Mauritius before sunset so could see out of windows but arrived at 2am it was pitch dark.
On the flight back to PER they changed our seats to 5D and 5F -? The 2 middle seats next to each other. It is a night flight so we have left as given.

There are a lot of luxe resorts in the area. We checked in the Westin last night and booked the cheapest room and got upgraded to a nice large room overlooking the sea / beach. Have not had time to check out the beach. Intercontinental is right next door. Will work out how to walk there later today. It has been raining on and off but hot and humid 🥵
Yes all resorts here are no where near shops so we are their captive audience in terms of food!
