Maximum SC's using YUP's

Yeah, trying to find those magic airports was the trick... :) It'd be great to compile a little list of them (prob not then displayed on a public forum however)...

there is no magic airports you can go via as many airports as you wish as long as you don't exceed MPM and there is seats in A or P class, and MPM is extended if you connect through AA hubs like DFW and ORD (usually unavoidable anyway). Use a good TA to get a nice little itin booked such as the one I am on now. Aloha by the way.

The magic airports was in reference to the fact that to go from A - B may cost $3000, but to go A - C - B (in a compartiable timeframe) will only cost $1000, even A - B - C - B seems to be only $1100 even though your on your original ($3000) A - B flight.

.... and there are many more scenarios similar to this example. :D

You should know by now that there is little apparent logic to any of this.
So true. I still have trouble comprehending how SYD-SIN or SYD-LHR can end up being more expensive than something like AKL-SYD-SIN or AKL-SYD-LHR.

I got a promotion email from my travel agent over in Europe last week advertising business class flights on QF to SYD and to AKL. The SYD flights are 3400 euros and the AKL ones 3200 ... 200 euros less to fly 3 hrs further. Beats me how this is possible.

Business class CX TPE-xHKG-MEL can be had for ~AUD2100 return.

Business class CX HKG-MEL can be had for ~AUD5200 return.

You get your bags checked for Mel-hkg and don't board the hkg-tpe segment?

If this airfare allows a stopover in HKG I would book the date you want to travel MEL/HKG then eg three days later book the HKG/TPE.

So when you checkin at MEL you won't have potential 'issues' explaining to checkin why you only want your luggage checked to HKG as checkin will only see the one flight for that day MEL/HKG which of course is your final destination! :p

If in doubt, always apply the KISS principle - keep it simple stupid.

Hello all, noob here :)

I've been researching a bit about yup/kup fares and have a few questions (and any help with suggested routing would greatly appreciated).

I need to be in Reno 17th-21st August next year and I'd also like to visit SFO for a bit of a holiday. This will be my first time travelling OS as QF Gold and it's right after my status credits reset so I'd like to be able to requalify straight away for gold and maybe even have a run at platinum.

From what I understand HNL is a good starting place for these runs and I've had a bit of a play with the multi city tool on aa.com.
HNL-DFW-TPA-DFW-RNO-DFW-MCO-DFW-SFO-HNL is approx $3420 plus taxes and I think about 1020 SCs. Is that a good price?

Going straight from HNL-RNO and adding in RNO-SFO-HNL doesn't seem to be very good value at about $2700.

I guess what I'm asking is for any tips on routing, should I just fly straight to LAX? But that would mean QF Y and with prices right now that'd cost more than star class to HNL (but would be cheaper for runs in the states I'm assuming).

Last couple questions, would a travel agent have any issues booking fares listed on aa.com? I tried the australian site but the same routing was like $7000 or more. I think I read in another thread you have to hold the booking online and then phone AA in australia?

Anyway, love the site and any tips would be great :)

You could do an open jaw itin for the intl long haul flights ie Aust/SFO surface HNL/Aust paying half a return airfare ex Aust to SFO & half a return fare ex Aust to HNL to get your fare.

The best prices ex HNL are to the Caribbean eg SJU/PAP/AUA etc but bear in mind you can only stop at any transit points for up to 24 hours so return airfares for any of the above YUP's or KUP's should be about USD1300.00 ish to USD1800.00. The only place you could spend more than 24 hours is your destination eg SJU/PAP/AUA.

As there are also pretty good fare levels ex LAS to above cities you could check out the ex RNO levels also. That way you'd have time to see SFO, make your way to LAS eg on VX (Virgin America) or RNO on another airline. Then have your stopover for a few nights in RNO. You would then start your status run on the KUP fare from RNO or LAS to Caribbean note that as KUP's are one way levels you could buy a LAS or RNO to SJU outbound then SJU to HNL inbound ie an open jaw itinerary.

I don't know whether Australian travel agents would have had much if any experience on purchasing YUP's & KUP's, in fact after reading this thread it's quite possible you may even know more than them!

IMHO AUD/USD3420.00 is way too much to pay if your only must see cities are SFO & RNO.

Thanks for the tips! I really have no idea what I'm doing, only recently started flying a lot more. It's kind of addictive :)

It's very addictive, and hanging around here certainly won't help that... ;)

BTW, welcome to AFF stark:!:

It's my new hobby now

I've been mistreating my AFF addiction and haven't really had much time to do anything more than just replying to threads I'm subscribed to rather than casting my eyes across new ones

I did catchup with another AFFer on the weekend though, so is in fact my first official visitor over here in Old London Town :D

Ill echo my welcome and th sentiments of others that its very addictive ;)

I'm currently in Florida around 2/3 of the way through my annual status run. I managed to earn my SC's for around $1.92 per SC (that's usually the easiest way of comparing runs value). If you have no particular plans, you want to look at HNL to desintatons such a BGI (went there and back today) or AUA as well as other caribbean locations.

Have a quick search around here and you'll see suggestions from lots of us who do status runs.

Again, welcome to AFF :)

I really have no particular plans outside of having to be in Reno for 5 days, I've done a lot of the major touristy things in the states before so I'm happy to go anywhere (at least once :)).

After a bit of playing around I've got it down to $2.25/SC with a multi trip hnl-bgi, bgi-rno, sfo-aua and back to hnl. Are there any issues with multiple entries into the states like that? (you know after a couple days in various caribbean locations)

Thanks again everyone, looks like I have some searching ahead of me. And you guys can expect some dumb questions when it comes to booking these :)
