I'd like an opportunity to meet some fellow AFF's (and a moderator). Can do Sat after 6pm for drinks/dinner, anywhere in Sydney is fine for me.

I could be encouraged to head to SYD for a night for the right reasons! (and yes, meeting with serfty does fit that criteria)

Is anything concrete? And of course I do have my PP card which should give good discounts at various ICH properties.

I also have about $1.5K locked up in Rydges gift cards that have to be used by the end of the year.... Bar party?

I have a number of good ausie reds (mainly 1980's and 1990's) in my cellar due for drinking now, would be happy to bring these if we went somewhere with BYO. Alternatively you could come to my place (eastern suburbs) for cheese and nibbles etc if you want to do a wine-tasting.

I just need to check something tonite first....I would love to catch up with Mal, John, and Ross again, and meet other AFFers like mhen.

Staying at the old airport Hilton (AKA "Mercure" - really good "super sale" rate).

Can come in via Wolli Ck rail.

As some of you may know, I've just moved (back) to Sydney after spending 6 years in Canberra.

I am tossing up going back to Canberra this weekend to sort out some things with my house there but after the hectic week this is turning out to be, I honestly don't know if I could be bothered.

So, if I stay in Sydney then I would love to join you all for drinks or dinner+drinks. Not fussed on location; I'm currently staying in Cremorne until I finalise my permanent residence so the city or surrounding precincts would be most convenient for me.

Ok, I'm in.

Flying BNE-SYD DJ938 (Sat 10:00-11:35)
Flying SYD-BNE DJ965 (Sun 17:00-18:30)
Staying at Rydges World Square.

I live close to the city but might head out to Palm Beach in the afternoon but should be back in time for drinks or dinner and drinks

It has been a while. From memory the last time was Ozfest in Hobart in 2008.

Brighton would be OKish but would not suit those closer to the city. Chinatown could be a good venue.

I don't really mind where we go as long as it is not too up-market. If it was up to me the bistro at Canterbury Leagues Club would more than suffice. ;)

Ok, I'm in.
If we can't catch up in Brisbane we may as well catch up in Sydney! :p

Wonderful offer with the Wine, cheese 'n nibbles, but I guess it'll need to be more central.

Ok, I'll leave it to you guys to work out. Needs to be reasonably priced, central, bookable, and, Oh, I'll eat just about anything. :D (BYO could be good too, eh, mhen ;))

Looking forward to this - most of my MR's are (by nature) rather solitary affairs ...

I will leave it to the others to choose. I have no idea about restaurants in Sydney but I am also extremely picky with certain foods.

If worse comes to worse I will still turn up for a drink or 2. ;)

I'm confirmed for Sat dinner...even tho. I live in Sydney, I rarely eat in the city. I know a couple of good Chinese restaurants in Chinatown but I wouldn't classify them as good "waterholes";)

IIRC, it's BYO wine only and the corkage fees are quite high as they are a bit upmarket restaurants. The 2 I'm thinking about are Marigold and Golden Century but they are typical Chinese restaurants ie very noisy!
Good Chinese restaurant sounds fine. They are not BYO?
The perfect place for our Do would be one of my locals, The Oaks Hotel but it is in Neutral Bay, 10 mins north of the Harbour:(. Will keep thinking...happy for anyone to chime in!

Any cuisine is fine with me. Lots of good places in the surrounding areas but dont know any in the city centre that are good food and reasonably priced. It has been suggested that Lucetta Pizzeria e Trattoria in Kent St has BYO and might be ok. Also newly opened Lynn Shanghai Cuisine in Castlereagh St which I think doesn't have BYO. I am happy to go anywhere and if they allow can bring along red wine but will modify my selection depending on the cuisine as aged robust reds are not suited to all cuisines.

For the wine buffs a quick look at cellar shows some of the bottles that have been in hiding include:
Grosset Gaia 1995
Fox Creek Reserve Shiraz 1996
Charles Melton Cab Sav 1998
Heritage Cab Sav 1998
Tyrrell's Vat 11 Baulkham Shiraz 1999
Bowen Estate Cab Sav 1991
Brian Light Reserve Shiraz 1994
Wynns Coonawarra Cab Sav 1990 and 1991
and various Zema, Coombend, Leconfield, Bethany and Helm.

Location is fine by me. I could walk home in 15 minutes without even bothering with public transport :D

For those in the city, you can get regular buses into the city from Military Rd. The easiest way into Wolli Creek by public transport would probably be a bus into Wynyard and then a train - I do that every day to get into the office (except I get off at Mascot) :)

But latish Saturday evenings?

The chance to meet JohnK proved too great so I booked to come over from Perth so I am now a definite.
Thinking about it the only places I am familiar with in Sydney city are Circular Quay thru to David Jones so it will be an adventure for me provided it isn't Smithfield or Wetherill Park in the country.

i think both these 2 places would be fine...however, the pizza place closes at 10pm and the Chinese place at 930pm. Without actually checking, I suspect both are a stone's throw from Town Hall station. Whilst the Oaks in Neutral Bay would be very nice, it might be difficult for everyone to get to.

If there is a strong desire to go the Oaks, I'm happy to drive people back to the city / train station after...I won't be drinking a lot as I'm now 2 months into an (almost) alcohol free zone....

Pizza place is actually a bit north west of Wynyard. Nice area. Not a huge fan of Chinese food myself. Planned drinks first?
