From the photos it looks like 17 bottles of Champagne and 1 bottle of Sparkling Red.

So MELCAN I is done and dusted – I certainly hope all those who attended (AFFDD) had as much fun as I did.

Special thanks to ALL attendees for making the effort to come along and ensure the night was so enjoyable

We did have a very brief discussion about MELCAN II re date / location etc – I will start another thread on that matter shortly.

10 random observations regarding last night:

• How lonely did that one single bottle of sparkling red look parked all alone on the ‘bottle table’ late into the festivities?
• When penegal turns up 30 minutes later than everybody else he is ‘technically’ still on time – correct?
• Who do you reckon caused the greatest problem for the wait staff when they were trying to accurately position meals on the table – the ‘smokers’ or the ‘chokers’?
• What did you all think of hughsy’s effort of sharing his Champers but not sharing his Champers glasses?
• How good was it to see blacky and Tom having an actual conversation through their mouths and not through their phones?
• Just wondering if penegal’s Fettuccini Funghi has arrived at the table yet?
• Has anybody ever seen a bigger ‘sooky la la’ effort than Goodonya when he realised penegal got 2 prawns on his pasta yet Goodonya got none? Do you think it was really necessary to call the manager down?
• Good form from J. K. Rowling wasn’t it? Promises all along to bring Krug but failed to deliver – not as though she couldn’t afford it hey guys?
• Champagne with port chasers – a first for me – any of you guys tried this before?
• Now seriously - the way that the bottles were opened, poured and devoured with gay abandon has anybody got any genuine recollection of quality / taste of each label?

FTR: IMHO – ‘Best in Show’ goes to the Vieille exhibited by UpInTheAir – closely followed by the Ruinart – well the Vieille bottle was clearly the nicest anyway!

Definitely one of my favourite AFF functions yet. Brilliantly organised, great venue, terrific company - old faces and new.

I'm definitely in for the next one

I do believe I disabused the notion that authors make any money AT ALL

By the way, I've heard that it goes gangbusters at airports; a brilliant airplane read. Or you can get one for your kindle...
