re: MEL Dinner/Drinks August 2nd @"Blue Train" from 5:30pm ...

I'm thinking somewhere on Southbank would be best. Easy to get to, easy to catch a train home after a wine or two.

Friday evening makes that a little interesting as there are many patrons at city venues concentrating on "after work week" drinkies ..., however as a base suggestion earlier this year in May we did Bear Brass:

Ground Floor (outside on the river),
Southgate Plaza
Southbank, Melbourne 3006

BearBrass Eating & Drinking by the Yarra, Southbank Melbourne

This is very convenient to public transport with many tram routes nearby and just a short walk across a footbridge to Flinders St Station.

I remember :p

If people are happy with the same place, thats fine. Also, Left Bank looked like it had a good menuLeft Bank Melbourne - Restaurant, Bar, Functions & Events.

My other suggestion is Va Bene, not at Southbank but down on the pier behind Etihad. Va Bene, Authentic Italian Restaurant, Exquisite Pizza, Traditional Pasta, Docklands Melbourne Walking distance to Southern Cross station.

BearBrass is good on Wednesday because of the $15 Pizza & Pint special. We have done this a few times now.

On Friday nights it is usually very busy because it's where PWC analysts drink.

I like Ludlow on Southbank also - Ludlow Bar & Dining Room :: Bar ? Restaurant ? Lounge ? Functions :: Southbank Melbourne

My 2 cents is that I don't think much of docklands (except for maybe p28)

Any of these venues can be quite busy on Fridays, so I recommend a booking be made to ensure "entry" and adequate table space.

Not a massive fan of the AFF-on-a-Friday thing (Friday nights are generally reserved for my nearest and dearest) so will let you know closer to the date :)

If a Wednesday is prefferred we could make it August 7. I only suggested Friday as its easier to stay out late, compared with when you've got an early start on Thursday (ie. me). Wednesdays and Fridays are the only days I'm in Parkville so its one or the other.

Not dear enough for ya :p

You mean we're not your nearest and dearest? Heck sounds like you have a life. :) Bring them with you.

I would prefer a Wednesday :)

Not necessarily. I know Wednesday is bad for a number of people, so Friday is better for them.

I just meant to say, I don't want to go to Bear Brass on a Friday ;)

Fair call. I'd actually rather leave it on the Friday. Just need a venue.

As I said on FB, I'm a maybe - will advise closer to the date.

re: MEL Dinner/Drinks August 2nd @"Blue Train" from 5:30pm ...

I like the idea of Va Bene (can practically see it from my house) ;) So long as the footy isn't on at Etihad it shouldn't be too busy. (From memory they used to have a function room out the back. Not sure if they still do though.)

You also have the Woolshed Pub a short stagger away if people want to kick on.

Wednesday the 7th is good.

re: MEL Dinner/Drinks August 2nd @"Blue Train" from 5:30pm ...

I would rather stick with the 2nd - even though I am working the next day. On the 7th I am back in ADL, so no good (for drinks, that is:)).

Keeping it on the 2nd. Mid-week drinking isn't quite as fun.

I should be able to make it, but won't confirm just yet. I still have a dry July to complete too, but that is because I am driving across the Simpson. :)
Are you ever home?

re: MEL Dinner/Drinks August 2nd @"Blue Train" from 5:30pm ...

I should be able to make it since it's just before my trip to London...
