MEL Dom. lounges refurb Completed October 2018

well actually I think it is something to whinge about :). I vaguely knew this was happening, but thought it was peak hours and didn’t think it Sunday would be so forgot to warn Ms FM who is travelling back from Melbourne today. She has a Qantas club membership which I have paid for and she uses about 3 times a year. It has made me reconsider renewing when her 4 year membership comes up - she has LTS and generally I pay for J when she travels overseas (and QC is pretty useless overseas anyway, except in the States). While I agree it is not a biggie, it is annoying that something I paid for is rendered useless without even a thought at compensation. Typical airline behaviour (and note I say airline not Qantas).

I will have to look at what QC gives her - I suspect I will be better off just giving her the membership money each year and telling her to buy something to eat and drink at the airport. :)
Like you my understanding was that it was to only affect peak hours - early morning and late afternoon but would've been only been week days I would have thought -obviously incorrect from the post above.

I certainly didn't intend denying anyone the right to whinge. I suspect a good portion of my posts would be regarded by someone as a whinge, so can't really be too critical.;)

I guess for the infrequent traveller who specifically wants this benefit it would be very frustrating. I agree that QC membership for 3 or 4 flights a year seems a waste.

The more frequent travellers would be more tolerant I guess, hoping that the refurbs ultimately provide a better product (J lounge at least). That said, I've avoided the Melbourne lounges so far as I've not been travelling QF (domestic) or in general as much lately. The BNE lounges during the refurbs were not too pleasant while the work was happening.

it wasn’t meant as an attack on you :). I was just reading the thread trying to work out what the situation was as I only had a vague memory and your comment struck a chord. :). I bought her brother and sister Life time QC when they were 18, but she wa only 15 when they discontinued it, so when she lost gold a couple of years ago I bought her a 4 year membership. I knew it wasn’t cost effective at the time but I thought it would be a nice to have for her, but really this has annoyed me so it has made me think about it.

yes I hadn’t really paid much attention to it and had vaguely assumed it was a weekday thing. Had totally forgotten about it until she texted me to say she hadn’t been allowed in, or rather she couldn’t bring her husband in. :)

From the Qantas website - Complimentary Lounge Invitations.

"Major upgrade to Qantas domestic lounges in Melbourne

Please note that paper and digital complimentary invitations are unable to be used at the Melbourne Qantas Club during the redevelopment of the Qantas Club and Business Lounge in 2018.
Thank you for your patience and we look forward to welcoming you again soon."

Does this mean that complimentary invitations are not able to be used in the Business Lounge now?

Can anyone clarify?

Thanks.

Didn't think there were any complimentary passes for the J lounge, only QF Club.

Complimentary invitations can still be used to enter Qantas International Business Lounges including Melbourne. Is that what you were asking about? They have never permitted access to the Domestic Business Lounge.

Yes. Thank you.

Didn't know there was a Domestic Business Lounge

Also P1's receive 2 comp invitations good for the dom J lounge and int F lounge.....

I thought about this before posting so went to look it up. It doesn't look like P1 invitations are valid for Dom J - only QP, Int J and Int F. See here and here.

well that is ridicously bizarre and I am thus corrected. Thank you.

Seems insane one can use it for the F lounge but not dom J (though I would consider it a waste of such an invite, but that's not the point).

How very odd.

Sorry for the wrong info folks.

I agree, the only plausible explanation is because P1s can guest two into Dom J, and those guests can be travelling any airline/not travelling at all, whereas guesting into Int F is limited to one companion and they must be on the same flight..

but these P1 invitations can be transferred to anyone and they do not have to be travelling with the P1. eg I've given one to my sister to use the F lounge before a flight.. I'd thought that was the main intent of the invites being given to P1's.. Short of wanting to take more than 1 into the F lounge or something.

Anyway still seems odd to me but it's there very specifically so.. I learned a new thing :)

I can’t find the thread so hopefully someone can point me to it ...

The new MEL don QP is opening next Wednesday. The staff are getting a look through today and they are suitably impressed. Peering around the hoardings is looks like there is lots of pale timber ala BNE.
Oh nice, we'll be passing through on the Saturday.
