MEL Dom. lounges refurb Completed October 2018

I can’t find the thread so hopefully someone can point me to it ...

The new MEL don QP is opening next Wednesday. The staff are getting a look through today and they are suitably impressed. Peering around the hoardings is looks like there is lots of pale timber ala BNE.

Look forward to checking it out in a few months.

Isn't that just stage 1?

ISTR completion later this year.

It was segregated into QP and J lounges around 2007.

It moved from that "bubble" area between gates 1 and "3" around the turn off the century.

I was wondering the same thing and what is the situation in regards to guesting by WPs and above currently set at 2 guests?

Ok have done some investigating.

The business lounge will be open as usual and will stay open with access through the new Qantas lounge. The existing half of the Qantas Club with the windows to the tarmac will then be turned into the NEW Business Lounge.

Once the New Business lounge is open then the current business lounge will be closed and it will be renovated and become part of the Qantas Club. This will mean two completely separate lounges.

During all of these renovations the normal entitlements will be in place such as 2 Guests for WP and above.

Hope that this answers every ones questions.

So the lounge is being done in 3 stages.

Stage One

Close half of the Qantas Club and Construction of the new Qantas Club currently due for completion.

Stage Two

Open the new Qantas Club and Construction of the New Business Lounge utilising half of the current Qantas Club Area facing the Tarmac, during which time the current business lounge will remain open as usual but with a different entrance.

Stage Three

Open the new Business Lounge and then Construction of the Qantas Club Extension using the current Business Lounge space.

Clear as mud LOL. :)

i was passing by yesterday and saw what seems to be the completion of stage 1 beyond the scaffolding at the top of the escalators. Interior looks like a mix of the new BNE domestic J lounge and current SYD domestic J lounge

Hoarding was down the other day as guys where bussing in pieces of what looked to be furniture somewhere. It was looking pretty spec!

Hmmm so I wonder if better to use the new QP than the existing older J lounge...until the new J lounge is finished!

The new QP will have lower capacity than what it will have once the refurb is complete for now. Having said that guesting restrictions for QP/SG members are still in place.

Seeing you have to go through the QP to get to the J lounge if you have time you could get the nicer food in the J lounge, but also spend some time in the QP trying out the new seating.

Took a look today, I think it nice but at 4pm it was pretty crowded. Seating space seemed to be a a premium. Add people and the lounge seems much smaller than in the pre opening photos on ausbt. Lack of windows is very noticeable.

Had a quick walkthrough before grabbing a bite in the J lounge. I know it’s only stage I and I also appreciate that there will be a bit of a dogleg into the current J lounge but the loss of a lot of natural light is a big loss for the QP. Luckily I have access to the J lounge for the time being. Can’t wait to see the new J lounge when it’s finished.

That's a long, crowded space. Pity it couldn't be broken up with partitions a la SYD F but I guess that would reduce the available space too much.
