Venue:
The Pub at Crown
Level 1, West End

This is adjacent to box office on level 1. From the Melbourne exihibition centre end, up one level and you are there - from any other entrance, enter the gaming area, (with the Yarra river at your back), turn right and take any elevator or escalator you see to level 1 - exit the casino gaming area at level 1 and you are there...

Having found some cheap flights, and taking a cue from the last Melbourne Drinks night, which was moved to the end of the month, I introduce: Melbourne Drinks July.

It has been suggested the venue should be the sports bar at the casino, due to it's ample parking, roominess and the fact it has a band. I tried to work out which bar that was, seeing as the casino has no less than 17 bars, but got lost.

Venue:
The Pub at Crown
Level 1, West End

Afterwards we'll head to Eighteen-O-Six.

Put me down as interested. I haven't done any planning for July yet, but I'll drop by if I'm in town.

As for venue, do you mean one of the nightclubs upstairs? Club Odeon?
IIRC all the 'bar' bars are on B1, G, or 1

( Crown - Nightclubs )

I'm not sure, there's plenty of time to plan, and/or change venues, I was suggested the top bar at the casino, but am not a regular to Melbourne so don't know where that would be.

No doubt someone will tell me where I've gone wrong.

I should be there. :)

And post-drinks at 1806 if anyone's still awake and (relatively) sober? :D

I'll be awake till my flight home, or sleeping on an airport bench till the QP opens, so I'm keen.

No HJ or McD part way through though. ;)

I'll also be trying to convince my dad to join me, as he'll be in AU in July. Whether or not he fancies sleeping on an airport bench is the question though.

Am interested myself. will need to confirm though..

If you are wanting a catch up and chat, Level 3 may not be quite as suitable. The sports bar is very good... massive screen etc easy to sit around and chat.

Agreeded, I think the 'nightclub' bars can get a bit noisy sometimes.

There's also a nice bar that's just opened on the ground floor near the Village cinema side of Crown. Has a good selection of beers and wines, and they do reasonable coughtails. I've only been there when it's quiet so not sure what it's like when it's busy.

I agree that somewhere where we don't have to shout to hear each other is good, at least for the earlier part of the evening. ;)

But as Sam is organising I think it's your call mate. :)

Oh goody, my call in a city I've spent little time in. :p

I think I should hand the call over to the Victorians, as it's your city and you know it best. I know I'll be coming in on the Skybus, so anything centrally located is good, but I simply don't know where is and isn't good for a Friday night. Ample parking would be good too though, for anyone driving in.

Plenty of time to figure a venue out though. :)

In that case...

Does it have to be Crown?

If it's somewhere you're not familiar with, you could always organise to meet up with someone somewhere central (i'll gladly volunteer if it comes to that).

I arrive in MEL at midday, so will no doubt have a wander anyway. As long as I don't have to rent a car to get to the venue, or take 5 buses, a couple trams, a taxi, ferry and walk a mile, I don't mind where it is.

I'd imagine the best spot is somewhere where everyone can talk freely, is easily accessible and known, and is easy to get to. Plus it wouldn't hurt if the drinks weren't overly expensive. :p

If you know a good spot, you're already ahead of me. :)

1806 - coughtail Bar on Exhibition St Melbourne

:D

It's a coughtail bar but they also have an excellent selection of beer.

For anyone driving, the venue is located near a few public carparks on Exhibition St.

They have menus on their website which should also indicate prices, so people can have a browse. If not, the coughtails cost approx $13-15 IIRC, beers/wines should be fairly standard pricing. coughtails are pretty good value IMO, as the average pricing around Melbourne bars is in the $18-20 mark, even for mediocre venues. Also helps that some of the bar staff are VERY easy on the eye. ;)

It might be a good idea to book a table if there are more than 5 of us but otherwise the door b*tch is very helpful in securing seats IME especially if turning up early.

There are also similarly good bars in Richmond, Fitzroy and St Kilda but I reckon the city venue is far more central and accessible.

It's still your call Sam. :)

Seeing as you ended there last time, and everyone enjoyed it, seems settled that'll be the venue. I'm just worried from this photo on their website, it looks a little busy in there.

Also, what's the noise like in there?

I would be a tentative ;)
1806 is a pretty nice place, not usually that crowded as they control entry. But hey will will have our spot being early.

It tends to get fairly packed on weekends, however they're quite good at sorting out seating. It certainly does not look as mad as that pic! They seem to take their OHS regs fairly seriously in terms of crowd control and if you try to rock up at 11pm-midnight you could be waiting for up to an hour to get in even if the bar doesn't really appear crowded. Assuming a 6-7pm start, we ought to have no worries. It's also table service. :)

The music's atmospheric and non-intrusive, perfectly suited for convos. anat0l whom I've also dragged there can attest to this. :) In fact the sounds of coughtail shakers are going to be heard more than any music they play!

Good Post!

I think the sports bar at the casino is a good place to start - from there who knows where the night will end!

Add Mrs! to the list as well
