According to ausbt, they are handing out $30 vouchers to use at airport cafes: Source

It seems like they will be opening it later this afternoon:

UPDATE | A Qantas spokesperson tells Australian Business Traveller that the Qantas Club, Qantas Business Lounge and Chairman's lounge at Melbourne Airport will all re-open later this afternoon after a fire broke out in the Qantas Club kitchen this morning.

I'll be there this evening, hopefully it is open by then!

Darn Alan Joyce is to blame!

If he didn't have a huge pay rise, and the fire crews were not stuck in the priority boarding line - this wouldn't have happened. Don't get me started on the overseas maintenance of the fridges!

And if only the lounge was open 24/7 it would have been noticed earlier and some one could have stopped it and saved us all from a fate worse than death NO LOUNGE ROFLMAO

It was obviously the fridge that stored the curries!

Actually, the MFB has released a preliminary report, it basically comes down to some petrified NPPP's that were wedged under one side of the fridge to stop it from tilting over.
Apparently the heat and pressure from the fridge was either going to turn the offending NPPP into a diamond, or make it spontaneously combust.

Mark Newson who had inspired the fridge was unavailable for comment.

All seems back to normal now, well except for a slight smoky smell in the foyer area.

The chariman's lounge door seem to be permanently open. Maybe to let out the smoke smell.

Was in MEL today at around 12. After clearing security (and the explosives test ) decided to check out the lounge to see what was happening. I was most impressed with the way QF handled it. I counted about 6 staff around the door, standing in front of a table of bottles of water and juice, as well as plates of things like hot cross buns and fruit. A QF staffer approached me and after seeing my QP card offered me a newspaper, drink, small snack and a $20 voucher telling me that I wouldn't get change so 'spend it all'!

Had the potential to be quite chaotic, but well very well handled by QF!!

I got there just after 6, didn't notice any smell... I did see some chicken sandwiches that I've never seen before though..

I would happily welcome them as a new regular item on the menu, they were placed next to and in addition to the usual food. My presumption is that due to the fire their kitchen wasn't able to prepare enough food in time for the "re-opening" so they had to call for extra supplies as a one-off to cater for the masses in the short term, whilst their kitchen was getting up and running. I did also notice bread and butter pudding as I was leaving at about 7.30, I don't ever remember seeing warm desserts at that time?

In saying that, this also marks my last dom departure out of MEL as a SG, so next time I will behaving like a true WP DYKWIA and bypassing the food in the QP and going straight to the J Lounge. Not that there's a whole heap of difference anyway
