Melbourne to Sydney by overnight XPT train

The cost of the sleeper cabin is $234 per person, but you need to call to book. There may be discounts if you have a Victorian or NSW pensioner concession or rail cards.

I haven't travelled myself on a long distance NSW train since late last year, but the disruption advisory for the cancellation of last night's overnight Melbourne - Sydney train, due to the XPT having broken down a few hours earlier, caught my eye:

It's rather blunt compared to how airlines, including even low cost airlines, handle similar disruptions.

Yes, this is a lower cost State Railway entity.

The XPT's are getting very long in the tooth, and break down fairly often (I was on one several years ago that couldn't go any further than Albury, so we were all bussed to MEL).

If you need to be somewhere at a certain time don't go NSW Trainlink (or give yourself a day or two leeway).

Normally, rail replacement buses are provided. What you highlighted was most unusual.
 
I never did do that. But there's no direct train, so you have to catch it from Yass or take a bus to Cootamundra and change to the XPT there. Alternatively, apparently it's cheaper if you book via V/Line and take a bus to Albury then a V/Line train from Albury to Melbourne.
I did it - and never again. Scenery outside the window is beautiful but the bus journey was so slow. You have to get off your train and get on the bus... and many hours later you have arrived, ragged and depleted.. You think of Europe (and Asia) and you think why can't Australia get it right. I can't believe we do not have a direct route from CBR to MEL. Though I didn't mind stopping at a country town to get a lunch-time meal. That was lovely to stretch my legs. If V-line doesn't get its act together, I hear flying taxis are on the way here. You snooze, you lose.

With respect I think you need a bit of a reality check.

V/Line Melbourne to Canberra is a service heavily subsidised by the Victorian taxpayers. Good luck finding a flying taxi to get you to Canberra for $35. The trade-off for that insanely cheap price is speed and relative comfort.

Agree. As an a side, the vline option is half an hour quicker than the NSW Trainlink bus to Yass XPT offering and usually less than half the price. Having done both recently, I prefer the vline, as long as nobody sits next me on the bus (a not always avoidable pet hate).
