Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre (Chinatown) opening April 2024

I looked at this, and even as a solo traveller, I looked at the rooms and rejected this hotel; however, the location seems quite reasonable.

I booked a night at the Grand Mercure Roxy. While being dated, I was serviced by efficient staff and had the fastest lifts in Singapore.
I used to stay there a few years ago. The corp rate gave Exec floor access but it was sort no where location (taxi everywhere).

Is there a metro line nearby now?

I had originally booked at the Icon but changed to the Sultan Hotel after reviews started coming in. It is in a heritage building about 100 metres from the Sultan Mosque. We have only been in a few minutes so am not sure about neighbouring room noise.

However we can faintly hear the call to prayer - no drama. And can also hear chickens crowing. The chicken noises are a nice extra to a Singapore hotel.

Thanks for sharing this information. There's a metro line about to open in front of the Grand Mercure - Marine Parade, I believe the name is. It's open to locals to walk around; it's been commissioned and will officially accept trains early June 24.

Cool. I thought I saw a new line on a map a few months ago. I must take an another look because that could make for a handy stop over hotel. It’s closer to the airport than the city.

Wow I too changed my Mercure Icon booking, so glad I did. I am staying at the Novotel on Kitchen near little India. Will be there in 8 days time.

Note though the TEL (Thompson East Coast Line) won't go to the airport, you need to backtrack to Marina Bay. At least for many years.

Was expecting this to end with "The author stayed as a guest of Accor".

Reads like the hotel is perfect !

Yes I agree. I don't know the author but based on that review they may struggle to pass a critical analysis course. It read like an advertisement written by AI.

OT, but that line will still provide good access into town from the Grand Mercure for Satays by the Bay or Maxwell. The cab ride to/from Changi is short, it was the relative remoteness from town that was a bummer for an otherwise good hotel. So now a good o/n stopover option.

Alrighty. Just about recovered from this place, so can drop a few lines about it. (Nah, it wasn't that bad)
We were here for five nights ahead of a trip to KL. The lobby's very spacious, if a bit psychedelic with their big LCD wall behind reception.
Cafe/bar is alright, but they got really funny with me for trying to take glasses back to the bar and kept telling me to sit down. And I could not - for the life of me - find a toilet around the cafe/bar or reception, so had to wander up to my room.

The rooms are... functional enough. But the quality assurance just wasn't there. There were spots where the wallpaper beside the TV wasn't actually pasted down to the wall, it had a big air pocket behind it. The floating veneer floorboards kept cracking - they clearly hadn't been levelled properly.

The toilet/shower room was just peculiar - the tiles were a bit garish on the wall; the grouting work was abysmal; and the shower door/floor tilt just didn't work, so ended up with a wet floor after each shower. And I kept getting freaked out when I ran the sink in the bedroom, as this massive gurgle would follow ten seconds later from the drain behind me and beside the toilet.

All in, it was alright. But aside from the lobby and finish of the hallways, I wouldn't say this place deserves four stars. Location's ideal, especially for wandering to Maxwell Road.

For the little extra you have to pay in the off season, though, I'd sooner be at the Pullman Singapore Orchard.

Many months on and 279 reviews it’s got 3.4 stars on Google. 3 out of 66 reviews on TripAdvisor. It’s a bit better on booking.com at 7.8/10.

Shout out to any members who have stayed here. I was looking at this hotel for a 2 night stay in January (on the way home from Christmas in UAE with Seat Son) and would love to hear more first hand experiences before booking. Thanks!

To be fair, for what you'd pay for a decent Accor hotel in January, it's not going to be that bad as a cheap alto.

Just don't book a week or two here, would be my advice. Fine for a short stopover.

Thanks @Cloud9 - your review above did make me wonder a little
Honestly, if you're just kipping there, you'll be grand, mate.
It's spitting distance from the best of China Town.

If you're going to do any real time in the room, though, grab a Pullman/Fairmont if you're in Accor land or head to the Fullerton or Raffles (if you're splashing the cash).

What would you regard as a “decent Accor hotel” in Singapore? Event the red hot deals for Swissôtel were more than AUD 500 a night (once you add in the taxes that are always excluded from the headline rate).

Thanks, you read my mind!

January isn't going to be cheap. Pullman Singapore Orchard is damn good and give you decent F&B credit as well as your welcome drinks. In the quiet season you can get it for about $420 a night. (Inc taxes based on a recent forced stay).

Swissotel never really appealed to me in Singapore. One bad experience, as it were.

Thanks again @Cloud9 - based on your kind input, and checking out recent reviews for both hotels, we have decided to go with the Pullman Singapore Orchard as per your suggestion (don't worry, I take full responsibility for my own decision 😅). And as you said, we got a fully flexible rate for $430/night including taxes. More than i really wanted to spend but 🤷‍♀️ 🤷‍♀️ - and it looks lovely. If the opportunity arises to cancel and select a cheaper, less flexible rate closer to time, I will do so - but at the moment given my state of health and the excess on travel insurance for a cancellation, fully flexible is a better deal for us. I think we will be pleased with the decision.
