I like the suggestion over at PPRuNe that because the 2 were flying to AMS the fact they went via China was very suspicious as they should have got the direct flight.
guess they haven't heard about mileage runs.
As to those stolen passports it is reported the tickets were purchased in Pattaya at the same time.

Apparently the Austrian reported as being on board is safe and well, and had his passport stolen in Thailand two years ago:
I have not kept up with regular updates but this does not sound good. That is now 2 people with stolen passports who are safe and well.

Actually there are now reports that there was up to 4 passengers carrying stolen passports.

And the captain of that flight was the pilot of the plane in this disaster:
Varig Flight 820 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
10 crew and one passenger survived, 123 killed. Terrible.

The 1979 disappearance was put down to cabin depressurisation according to that article. That means it could have crashed anywhere in the north Pacific I guess if it was on autopilot. A lot of ocean out there so not as surprising it wasn't found. The MH flight is in a far busier area so you'd assume something will turn up.

This is all very sad.

One just hopes that this is not a Terrorist attack. Whilst loss of life is never good in any accident it is unforgivable when life is deliberately taken away by selfish people....
Selfish people who believe they are right.

Makes no sense to us but they do not care about collateral damage to get their point across....

My sons friend flew to KL on that plane yesterday.

"As far as we're aware, every one of the people onboard that aircraft had a visa to go to China. Which means those passports were in the possession of the Chinese embassy before those visas were issued."

Found this on Huff Post article.

its a very good point. The lax in security at KL has been explained but why was the stolen passports not flag by the chinese embassy??

In other news a CNN reporter is claiming on twitter that debris has been found Tho Chu island. no source reported tho.

* sorry he actually stated "strange object spotted"

This really scared the cough out of me. Talk about a near miss. I was at future music festival yesterday so didn't see the news until late last night. I had family who were flying on that exact flight. So I freaked out and tried contacting them, no answer which you could imagine what was going through my head.

Turns out they change their travel plans and got on the next flight the day later, which by the time I had found out the news. They were on the flight, so I couldn't contact them. Thankfully they arrived safely. They said there was no news of the crash at the airport at all. They only found out about it after they arrived.

So this really has reminded me how easily things like this can affect anyone.

That's spine- chilling! How are you doing?

Do you need to submit your passport to the Chinese embassy if you're just transiting there?
