AMSA have advised the base for searching will be RAAF Pearce, with an additional two P3s being tasked in conjunction with the assets returning from Cocos Islands. No word yet on any P8s, ironically the P8 involved in the search so far was at Peace three weeks ago as callsign Talon 01, tail number 168429. ACARS data shows the aircraft operating under MY designators in recent days.

It is inaccurate to state as fact that all comms were "switched off".
The only thing we know was that they "went off".

The official position has already jumped the shark by being persuaded without evidence that the flight was hijacked.

Cooler heads (with no vested interests) should prevail and the wreckage search should start again - the closer to home the better.
Forget all the mystery radar blips etc.

Just go old school and start the search based on the only eye witnesses - Vung Tau (Oil rig worker says he saw Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 burst into flames | News.com.au , Kota Bharu Missing MH370: Kelantan duo report seeing lights 'falling' at high speed - Nation | The Star Online and Kuala Terengganu MISSING MH370: Terengganu police receive report on explosion in Marang - Latest - New Straits Times

Looks like an unbelievably heroic effort by the pilot(s) to me - nearly got that baby back home.

That surprises me as I thougt they had more info than the rest of the world & knew where MH370 was & we'd just be fed crunbs as Uncle Sam saw fit until we eventaully had enough info to piece together in order to find it.

Tony Abbott almost seemed like a kid in a candy shop in offering the assistance of the Aust Govt which the Malaysian PM has "graciously accepted".

This goes way beyond the Riddle of the Stinson or disappearance of the Marie Celeste.

Inaccurate to sat they were switched off??? Any other alternative would have seen other systems drop at the same time, and or alerts transmitted, it's in reality the only real conclusion. ACARS failure, then Transponder failure, then VHF failure, no HF calls or EPIRB activation yet still have a functional Satcomm??

As for going back to basics, the area has already been searched as you requested, and is still being searched on a hourly basis by virtue of the traffic that plys the waters in those areas.

Your post reads like a PR piece for Malaysian self interests, while ignoring facts that have not been declared as "inaccurate" by the officials to date, no matter what self interests they have.

I believe the oil workers sighting could not have been MH370.There have been other explanations of what he may have seen but being at least 200 miles from where MH370 could have been since the confirmed message from the co pilot if he did see MH370 it would have been on the horizon not high in the sky.
There are also eye witness reports of a low flying aircraft over the East coast of Malaysia which are consistent with the facts as per the PMs briefing.
MISSING MH370: 'Plane flew low to avoid radar' - General - New Straits Times
The satellite pings are no mystery. The satellite tries to contact the plane which replies. The 6th ping was replied to,the 7th ping was not.Hence the corridors as to where this ping might have come from.
As to the cargo there is more info and apparently the unusual cargo was 4 tonnes of mangosteens. Now I love mangosteens but hijacking a plane to get some?No way.
As to there being gold or cash onboard surely the tried and true way of holding up the transport on the way to the airport makes much more sense than hijacking the plane.

Has MH disclosed what cargo it was carrying? It could have been a catastrophic dangerous goods situation where DG's were carried that shouldn't have been.

It's not the first time that's happened as there was an incident in 2000 when a Chinese company lied about what goods it was shipping which resulted in irrepairable damage to an MH A330 on a flight PEK/KUL due to the corrosive nature of the cargo & the a/c was a write off.

Hi guys. I'm on limited internet so has any progress been made rather than trawling through? Not lazy just internet poor. :p

Over on Prrune a septic called xcitation has posted that military radar at Andaman Islands usually switched on on-demand but usually off at night.
According to the military chief for India on the Andaman islands they only operate when required to. I have heard that this is during normal working hours and they turn off in the evening.

edit; No I am not trolling the pprune site as well. :) Just popped over having not looked in a few days...really.

A little diversion from the current to the future

JB and markis10 were concerned about the risk of fire if the transponders are not allowed to be switched off at all or hampered by password / key security.

I'd like to think that they are quite useful once planes are in the air.

So, maybe they could design the transponders / ACARS to send out a tamper-proof signal on switching off with location coordinates, altitude, heading, speed etc... and a message "I am being switched off" i.e. a snapshot of the plane at that moment.

Post-MH370, that signal would alert the relevant authorities to take whatever the rules book say they should take.

And if the planes are on the ground, switching off would not send that message.

Perhaps some engineers here may point out that it is not possible to design such a systems but I hope it is.

My 2c effort at diversion.

A piece from an Australian aviation expert Ron Bartsch as to the changing heights flown by MH370.

He also did a Q&A online but has now finished.

Then there's this story about changes programmed into the FMS:

There's also some photographs of some of the pax.

If we are frustrated at not being able to understand what happened, imagine the families. Hope this doesn't drag on like AF447

this may have alreday been covered.
I was under the impression that a single seat aircraft had a coughpit and a passenger Jet had a flight deck.
Maybe the pilots can enlighten me here, I notice that nearly all of the press are referring to a coughpit .

Chemical-damaged A330 is finally written off - 3/27/2001 - Flight Global

I believe that it's been established that the cargo on MH370 wasn't scanned at KUL due to an equipment malfunction and that we don't actually know what was on board. Though given the rate at which facts are being categorically confirmed and subsequently denied, this could change by tonight.

A copy of all the IATA DG declarations approved by the Cargo Officer are kept by the freight forwarder, the airline and the sender. It shouldn't be hard to find a list of all declared DG for this flight.
