MH 777 missing - MH370 media statement

Can we get back to the real story that Tony only made the statement to get the heat off that senator, and party members repaying donations.

Why would anyone make any statement till real parts have been found?

I assume the comment is tongue-in-cheek, and that the "party members repaying donations" refers to this: pay-back-secret-rudd-donation-bill-shorten (but why Tony Abbott would want to divert attention from that, escapes me  ).

But if not  - possibly the reason for the announcement was because some-one might ask questions when they inevitably noticed that a bunch of Australian planes are making continuous sorties to the southern Indian Ocean at considerable cost and risk to those in the air. After which would come the equally inevitable cry of "Cover-up" "What are you hiding?" etc.

If no-one made any statement until "real parts were found" - wouldn't it be odd that an airliner disappears with a few hundred people and no-one says anything?

Well the media now getting stuck into the PM. Good. Why would any person make any statements, especially after 2 weeks of one bad report after another, unless
they trying to grandstand. You would not make a statement unless you had 99.99% facts to back it up, not some photo from the moon.
And it just makes Australia look stupid. Are we trying to out do the Malaysian officials.

A government BBJ just landed at Perth after doing a very odd flight diversion over Newcastle.

There were plenty of disclaimers in all the talk though.

There had to be some justification for sending all that hardware to the middle of the great blue so a bit hard to hush it up.

Not that I'm defending Abbott...

I'm still assuming that the comments are taking the pizz. However  ...with markis10 watching 'every' aircraft movement like a hawk, and like others posting them online and discussing them, AND with the search planes themselves carrying reporters, do you really think that the government saying nothing was an option?

Really?

And surely its John Howard's fault anyway, not Tony Abbott's?

You just would not make a statement in parliament. Even later on after the PM made the statement, the official was smart enough to say, he couldn't see anything from the sat photo. He wasnt jumping to conclusions. Sounds like another WMD- weapons of mass disillusion scene. When will Malcolm in the middle take over?

So it was a rather important announcement, hence it being made to Parliament. Can't be fairer than that.

The openness being shown by the Australians is being praised in BBC reports, even with them stating that "nothing has been confirmed".

We've all seen how the "wait until fully confirmed" line (by the Malaysian Government) has been welcomed - coverup/useless/time wasting, by just about everyone. Now Australia is being "very open" (quoted by BBC reporter) and keeping everyone fully appraised, yet there are still shout outs that we shouldn't be grandstanding and releasing information too soon. Can't have it both ways, I'm afraid. Pot,kettle anyone. . . . .

Yes we released information with full caveats in place that it "may not be MH370 debris", but at least we have been (seemingly) fully open on our findings since we began searching this particular area in comparison to the previous searches conducted by other officials. Daily updates, maps, images - all freely available for you to view and read if you so choose.

Surely, that is of some comfort to the Chinese (who are screaming cover up at the MG) and the other families of the passengers, even though the "debris" is still yet to be confirmed as being pieces of the missing aircraft?

I'm not defending the AU government either - I haven't lived there for 10 years, but bashing them for trying to take a professional stance with regard to what they are up to in this instance is rather narrow minded IMHO.

I would expect the same be it a Labor or Liberal government - finding that plane is the number of 1 priority for all involved, until then we don't know s*** and the rampant theories by so called "experts" and speculation from every corner of the world is becoming tiresome and annoying.

If you had watched the overseas news cable channels after he said it in parliament. They all may the same statement it must be 99.9% true, as an Australian Prime Minister would not get up in parliament and make such an statement. I would never had made such a statement unless 100% confirmed after 2 weeks of miss information and heart-ache to families.

I did watch and my take on the announcement was that he was confirming action in the area, confirming debris had been found and (not least) confirming that "it may not be part of MH370". At no point did the BBC report (the only channel I have cable access to), that the PM's statement "confirmed the debris to be from MH370".

And as stated previously - we can all see how the "wait until we are 100% sure" stance is working out: it's being called BS and a cover-up by families, news agencies and experts.

I expect a democratic government (regardless of where in the world they are) to keep its citizens appraised of developments that are happening in the here and now - if those appraisals come with a caveat, so be it, but at least people would then actually know what is happening, rather than being kept in the dark and only being fed what they want their citizens to know.

Short sighted on my part perhaps? Maybe.
Wanting to know what is happening in my world? That is my democratic right.

If that means I receive information that is "credible but not 100% confirmed", I'll take that over sanctioned (and possibly days old) news reports (propaganda?) any day of the week.

Of course YMMV.

Don't you mean John Abbott ? :)

[MOD HAT ON]

Unless comments are directly pertinent to the discussion here (MH370), it will be deleted or moved to the other thread. This is not a thread to debate the reasons why things were said by Politicians. This is not the time or place.

DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR????

(Thinking time)

Good, I just wouldn't want anybody to be confused. Now that the position is crystal clear, as you were..:D

Now this is an interesting option. As posted on FT by Thomas Harry:

Been following this thread for a couple of days. Some very interesting posts ... thank you. I stumbled on something on another website which I'm curious about ...

Put the following two sets of coordinates into Google maps and see what you think:

40.0800° N, 116.5844° E
40.0800° S, 116.5844° E

Notice the locations and how similar the coordinates are except for one for letter!

Now that can't possibly be a coincidence

Now, apparently the N co-ordinates are PEK airport (I've not checked it out). May not be a coincidence. Could it have been entered incorrectly (S instead on N)?

He comments in a later post:
I spotted the post/coordinates on avherald.com UK time 14:02 20/03/14.

That website is overrun by armchair plane spotters coming up with all sorts of conspiracy theories re: MH370 and the post was like a needle in a haystack (a bit like trying to find this plane in the Indian Ocean) with only one response!

However, once I'd Google mapped it I was fascinated by the remarkable coincidence

Interesting.

I had a look at PEK on World Airports Code, and they give the following:

LAT 40.080101 LON 116.5849991
