Middle East Airspace Diversions/Cancellations

Just got some info from Qantas for Wednesdays QF9 flight. Apparently the same plane will leave Perth via Singapore as QF 209 4 hours earlier to arrive at Heathrow at the scheduled time. Looks like I’m going to be leaving home in Melbourne around 4.00am to get to Perth in time.

Leaving at 0400 for an 1045 push back?

I'm driving down from Wangaratta, but won't be planning on leaving before 0530...

And reports are that Israel has fired missiles into Iran, Iraq and Syria in retaliation and some airlines are avoiding Iranian airspace again

Seems that the region as edging towards wider conflict, doesn't bode well for air travel / flight paths through the region.

Where are QF getting the SIN slots from to add the tech stop? (if this should become longer term......)

Checked in this morning at ZRH for SQ flight to SIN. Check in agent said flight is full and it’s got very busy and all flights going close to full as people are avoiding the ME. From flight aware SQ seem to be threading the needle.

Probably due more to the DXB floods than anything else.

The arc still looks like it's going towards de-escalation. Iran really don't want a war, Israel's allies really don't want one either. Think Netanyahu and Ben Gvir could see advantages in a war but they're already on shaky terms with their allies.

Granted sometimes we get war even when both sides don't want one so not out of the woods yet, but think the immediate aftermath of Israel's most recent strike (before we found out details/Iran's response) was the apex of the concerns.

I'm flying QF9 in J from MEL in mid June, suspect it'll be back on the old schedule by then but would probably prefer leaving a bit earlier and having the stop in SIN, have a bit of dinner at the Qatar lounge etc. 17hrs without Wifi too on the original routing...

Or a war? There are a few diversions in place, even more prominent airlines cutting it close to the bone time-wise - EK?

Some perhaps but an entire hub of the largest ME airline is flooded. So as I said, more.

Yes, I saw that—a year's rain in one day effectively closed their airport for a while.

That’s an understatement.

EK won’t carry pax who are connecting in DXB. Only pax already stuck in Dubai, or travelling directly to or from Dubai can board.

Hence I’m not surprised airlines such as SQ are getting extra pax.

TBH out of ZRH the premium classes filled up on SQ a few days before the floods happened. Granted that could be just normal ZRH loads, but had nothing to do with the floods. Economy on the other hand did fill up relatively late in the piece, so may have.

The agent didn’t just suggest last couple of days either.

It’s time for QF to resume flying this route and stop bleeding customers to rivals.

If EK, TK and QR can fly 100 planes over Iran daily, as they are doing now, then QF should be capable of flying one per day over this safe airspace.

Iran have said they will not retaliate against the alleged Israeli drone attacks. Gives QF even more reason to resume this route.

Personally I'm happy for QF to make its own risk assessments.
I'd imagine that our government has access to better intelligence and advice than some of those other airlines' countries.
And Australian flyers, as a whole, tend to value safety quite highly (even if some might feel disproportionately to actual risk)

Scheduled to return to a direct flight next weekend.
