Indeed the American's think (rightly or wrongly ;)) that Australia and New Zealand are the same country. So makes for some very good value awards for longer trips (such as PER-AKL), but can be poor value for short trips (such as BNE-SYD).

I'm interested as we have a wedding in April, I'm short of QF points and SWMBO is not liking the possibility of non J travel. So I could purchase enough points to at least get her ADL-BNE return in J. Thanks for the guidance.
Decisions decisions.

Does a purchase of miles each year count as activity, so the miles wont expire?
I received an email from AA about my AA miles expiring in 3 months and it contained this information

AA Miles Expiring rmail said:
Another way to keep your miles active is with the buyAAmiles® program. For less than $60, you can purchase 1,000 AAdvantage miles and ensure that your entire mileage balance is available for your use for at least 18 more months! It's that easy.

Hmmmm this got me thinking;-

If I purchase 40k + 15K bonus, then someone else gifts me 40K ... will I get the 15K bonus as well?

I know for US DM it worked so I would only think its logical for this to work as well ;)

The 40K limit is per account. So you couldn't buy 40K and receive a gift of 40K.

You could however buy 40K for yourself and receive the 15K bonus. Then gift 40K to someone else and you would receive an additional 15K bonus. The bonus goes to the purchaser and doesn't count towards annual limit.

Well medhead ADL-BNE return on QF in J Classic costs 48k points.
How many AA points for this same flight?

Wouldn't this be an expensive way of receiving an additional 15,000 bonus AA miles? If I am reading the AA website correctly it would cost ~USD1105 to purchase 40,000 AA miles + 15,000 bonus AA miles and then another ~USD1000 to gift 40,000 AA miles and receive the 15,000 bonus AA miles.

Yes you're correct John.

I wouldn't do it, just saying you could.

Of course I guess it depends who you were gifting it to... ;)

As I have just worked out earlier it is 35000 AA points for the return. Certainly not the best value available. I'm guessing those points would cost about $750 or $800 not counting the bonus points.

HI everyone, i'm thinking of utilising this offer and was wondering whether it is possible to buy 40k miles AND be gifted another 40k miles? If so, wife and I can each buy 40k for ourselves and gift 40k to each other. And get 30k bonus points each on top of it at the end.

Is this do-able?

Regards,
Benhadi

80,000 will get you First to anywhere in Europe. QFF is 192,000 points just to LHR. Buy AA miles during a bonus period, supplement with SPG points and it's a no brainer.

What's the transfer rate from Amex MR - SPG - AA ?

I don't think it would be possible to gift to each other as you would have reached your limit but consider the following point from my earlier post.

It would cost ~USD1105 to purchase 40,000 AA miles + 15,000 bonus AA miles and then another ~USD1000 to gift 40,000 AA miles and receive the 15,000 bonus AA miles.

It seems an expensive way to get an additional 15,000 AA miles by gifting.

What's the transfer rate from Amex MR - SPG - AA ?
Amex 1000 MR points = 330 SPG points
SPG 20,000 points = 25,000 AA miles (20,000 AA miles + 5,000 bonus AA miles)

Need to transfer in lots of 20,000 to get the 5,000 bonus AA miles otherwise it is 1->1 tranfer.

Anyone looking for that "someone" to gift 40,000 miles, I am a willing recipient

SPG 20,000 points = 25,000 AA miles (20,000 AA miles + 5,000 bonus AA miles)

To me, this seems like alot of MR points to swap just to get AA miles.

60,000 MR = 20,000 SPG = 25,000 AA miles.

or

60,000 MR = 60,000 SQ KF

Based on that I'll be sending them to KF

(Even though taxes on SQ are much higher.)

OK thanks for the info, based on the limit restrictions I am not going to utilise this AA Buy Miles promotion.

Thanks JohnK for the info.

Seems like i'll need to top up every year for about 3 years before i can rack up enough points for a return F to europe.

I've been sending my MR to KF too, and I find them easier to book awards through.

I have found the best time to Buy AA Miles is in Nov/Dec when they usually run a promotion where you can buy 60,000 miles (normal 40,000 cap gets lifted to 60,000) plus get 20,000 bonus miles for a total of 80,000 miles. Costs $1,500. I have done this last three years like clockwork. I have never seen a better deal and QFF can never match it. You have just missed the last promotion that ended 31st Dec 2010. The deal now has gone back to the normal 40,000 annual cap.
