Miles on Sale

Going back to using 100k QF points to do that LAX-JFK-LAX I have always thought of that costing either $A833 plus $US5 off Amex or about $183 less on a point a dollar Visa or MasterCard.
When you are earning buckets loads of points via credit card then that is going to be much better value than purchasing points even if it is AAdvantage.

The only problem with those thoughts is that the points are derived from paying tax so the money is gone and Julia and Wayne are planning to spend all of it and maybe even a little more.

hmmm, pity to just learn about this now just in the new year... as i just got an email from AA with the new offer and then i read this thread...

If there are no family transfers over the limit seems like it might just have to be a 60k purchas of points (or more) sometime this year and maybe another next year plus a few more points to get the 120k business class return flight from Australia to Europe...

maybe i can use that in 2013 when i turn 40 for my first business class flight as a nice little reward, as i would still like to shoot for another 140k RTW OW award flight next year...

by the way what does SPG refer to?

SPG is Starwood hotels-sheraton etc.You can transfer to the SPG program from Amex or DC and then on to Aadvantage. If you transfer 20000 SPG points to AA you get a 5000 point bonus.
Amex-Transfer 1000-330 SPG.
DC-transfer 2-1 spg point.

Actually SPG is Starwood Preferred Guest which is a different entity to Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

Technically correct but in practical terms no different as the first part of SPGs T&Cs points out-
These Terms and Conditions govern the Starwood Preferred Guest® Program (the "Program") operated by or on behalf of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. ("Starwood Hotels" or "we") and our relationship with members of the Program ("Members" or

I believe the redemption value is much better than QFF points purely on the fact that one is able to purchase AA miles cheaply with the bonus AA miles, well a big bonus.

I am extremely optimistic but one would assume if 40,000 AA miles cost ~USD1100 then 60,000 AA miles would cost ~USD1650.

I can go one-way SYD-BKK in economy for 25,000 AA miles or 35,000 in business class.

Economy does not sound like good value as I can purchase a BKK-SIN in CX business class for ~AUD600 and SIN-MEL-SYD//BNE-SYD-SIN for ~AUD800. So all up I have spent ~AUD1,400 and earn 200 SCs and ~20,000 QFF points which is an absolute bargain.

Assuming AA miles are purchased at ~USD0.02/mile then an economy return award for 50,000 AA miles would cost ~USD1,000 + minimal taxes and surharges which is really poor value.

But if one redeems a return business class award for 70,000 AA miles it would cost ~USD1,400 + minimal taxes and works out to a be a very good deal.

Of course we all have different needs so best for the individual to calculate the value for themselves. And for some the need to earn SCs at some point in time for status also needs to come into the equation. e.g An AA award in business class is great but also sacrificing 200 SCs which are needed to maintain Platinum status and will cost more somewhere else.

Hi John,

Also currently available on JQ special is Mel/Bkk/Mel for AU$1,098 which earns 240 QF SCs and 20,580 QF miles for a WP. Very good value for money, for an AU originated and terminated flight. If needed, this is a quick, convenient and low cost SC and mileage earner.

Agreed that JQ *Class earns decent SCs but for some JQ is on the no-fly list.

Hi John,

I have done the Mel/Bkk/Mel in JQ StarClass about 12 time so far and no issues. Nothing to complain about. QF J does have a bigger seat pitch. Even though I'm a thinnish 1.9m guy, the JQ StarClass seat is OK. I get good sleep on the inward overnight JQ 30 flight.

Only complaint is a lack of inward Oz Express Cards and no Express passes for Bkk customs inbound or outbound. Other than that issue, no complaints or bad service. Quite the reverse in fact, the cabin staff are very attentive and even though the StarClass cabin is not that big, there are 5 cabin staff to get you anything you want.

That's very very tempting. Especially with the way the dollar is now, almost $1.04!

Not sure if I want to max out my miles buying in March though :-|

Actually it doesn't work out to be as good value as the 15,000 bonus miles when purchasing 40,000 that was on since Jan.

I'm disappointed as was about to make a new purchase.

Seems like I might wait and see what comes later in the year, then.

Hopefully they will increase the number of miles you can buy per year.I bought in last month as I am trying to top the 2 million this year-should make it.

Trying to work out if the current 20% off for buying miles is worthwhile value.

We have had 2 recent promotions
- buy 60,000 AA miles and receive 20,000 bonus AA miles and,
- buy 40,000 AA miles and receive 15,000 bonus AA miles

It would appear that the current 20% off promotion is not as enticing as the previous promotions. Am I correct in my assumption?

Also is it worthwhile waiting for any of the previous promotions to re-appear?

There is a 30th anniversary deal on for the next 24 hours of 30% off.Still not quite as good as last month's offer but not bad.
www.aa.com/viewPromotionDetails.do?fN=AO041511_30.xml&locale=en_US

Link mightn't work as with recent update i am having trouble copying address bar.

Sadly, I suspect that the reason that I have not received an email promoting this one is the clause:

Void outside of the fifty (50) United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico or where prohibited by law. :(

Whether a smallish prize, sweep or deal may escape notice ...

With our miles due to expire in July, I've just purchased miles on the 30% off deal for both myself and my wife. Combined with the current forex rate this is a great deal. No issues with the Australian address.

Problem is if you want to travel in something other than economy an business award to Europe is 60k points, so to get a return really need an offer that gives more points (ideally 60k for two years running) than a discounted 40k point offer...

Well done Baysider!

Despite the non-US disclaimer, have your bonus miles posted yet? they do claim up to 72 hours. If so, I wonder if the entire 30th anniversary promo deals are valid worldwide then...
