Missy Higgins rants about Vegetarian options on-board

I am Vegan and find QF vegan special meals in Economy, Business and First all to be excellent. I consider myself to be a non-fussy vegan.

On a flight to Darwin I was sitting across the ailse from a senator and when she was offered the meals choices she pointed to mine and said "I want what he is having". The senator was then politely told that there was only one of that and it was for me!

On the other hand on Virgin airlines, I have not been able to get a Vegan meal in business class domestically nor in full fare economy to Fiji.

Yes it shouldn't be hard to produce a good vegan or vegetarian meal.I have eaten either at restaurants or on cruises and have found them enjoyable.I remember a vegetable platter I had at David Alps at Strathlyn on the Tamar as one of my outstanding meals.Unfortunately he is not there now but has a deli in Launceston the last time I was there. That sort of dish should be easily reproduced and much more suitable as an airline meal than the regular meals as basically all that would have to be done is arrange the dish.

I just had the worst airline meal I have ever had. The VGML served on Qf6 Sin-Syd was just awful. Spaghetti with a minced mushroom and garlic topping. It looked horrible and tasted just as bad. It really is not difficult to provide tasty, enjoyable vegetarian meals, I don't understand why Qf find it so hard.

When you say "VGML" are you using that code to talk generically about vegetarian meals or did you specifically use the SSR code of VGML to order a vegan meal?

I still think there are people incorrectly using the vegan code of "VGML" when they in fact want a lacto-ovo vegetarian meal which is the code "VLML".

Of course when they get the (vegan) special meal that they ordered they then complain because they were expecting to receive a lacto-ovo one instead.

I was in Economy and it was VLML (I received butter with my roll) but I am happy with either VGML or VLML and swap between them for variety on flights. There was no discernible dairy in the pasta sauce, I guess the pasta could have been an egg pasta, but it isn't really important in this case anyway.

I do tend to use VGML to denote any vego meal. My specific profile request is for AVML (Asian vego meal) which is the only QF made with no nuts.
