Moderators should be able to delete "Irrelevant" posts

There is no such thing as an irrelevant post. Some off-topic posts lead to gold mines. If a post is abusive then that is already taken care of by the moderators.

Some people don't post much at all. Some people post more than others. It is a community not a heavily moderated forum with only "relevant" threads and posts.

P.S. I am not sure why some people lose sleep over the posting habits of others around them.

The irrelevant post itself sometimes might not be much - but all the counter posts to it can go on and on - for pages sometimes - which can ruin the thread.

I had to split a debate from a thread this morning, it went on for 21 posts. I wouldn't say they were irrelevant, because they brought up some good information, just not on the topic they were being posted in. In moving the posts I then had to clean up a few posts that had quoted both the right topic and the other topic, otherwise there'd be a lack of context in both the old and new threads, with certain posts missing. It took a bit of time... ;)

I'm actually there (or here) now but that is even further OT. :)

FWIW I suspect the OP was referring to one or a small number of "serial thread hijackers", for lack of a better word, who regularly and consistently post the same sort of random comments into a thread that have nothing or very little to do with the topic of discussion. Perhaps a solution is to send a warning to members if they continue to do this on a regular basis?

I don't mind a bit of off-topic discussion myself (to an extent) but if the OP and I are thinking along the same lines here, I would agree that the kind of posts being referred to tend to detract, not add to the discussion.

I saw this thread and thought "cool, I can up my post count by one". I probably should have thought about doing it with the shortest post ever. Has there ever been a one letter post on AFF? Damn, I could have set that mark with this one. Too late now I guess ...and I'm still typing! Hmmm, let's see what else. Stream of consciousness. Steam of un-consciousness maybe. Sorry, what were we talking about again?

Posts must be 10 characters or longer.

If this is the case, the best advice I can give to all members is to simply report the post and give a detailed reason why. As has been mentioned, all moderators will be alerted to the reported post and can then act on it, or have a discussion about what to do. Without your help reporting posts, we'd be none the wiser ;)

If they are serial abusers you may find you get more reports than you are expecting?

My history on AFF is one of the longest (depending on which version one joined), but I certainly remember talking to Admin and the Mods of the time about setting up the original "off topic thread" as there needed to be somewhere that members could "let off steam" or post something non-flying related - we also set the Playground posts as being not counted towards post total (probably almost as important).

Back to the OP and discussion. We allow a little bit of latitude in posts, as admin pointed out, that's part of the fabric of this Forum. We do have the ability to either hard or soft delete a post. Often the most "fun" I have is to read the soft deleted ones done by other Mods (as we Mods can still see the post) because that helps me understand both the member and the possible reason behind the post (personal attack, irrelevant/off topic, etc). I find that enlightening at times and often helps me to counsel the member.

Perhaps we should use this stamp: http://thumb9.shutterstock.com/disp...886/stock-photo-irrelevant-icon-183682886.jpg in the future :D. I'm sure it would wear out its welcome before too long.

There are some good suggestions about the "fluff" that sometimes appears [we are all guilty of it at some time;)] - using the ignore function is a good one, or just setting your own "skip and ignore detector "means they aren't getting the desired level of antagonism. l'll admit, it's hard to ignore comments sometimes (and I can't put anybody on the "ignore list" - although there are candidates for my top 10).

Yes, its frustrating at times but we do moderation because we love the sense of community and the ability to give back. There are people I have met and places I have visited with them that will go with me to my dying day. Some I even call close friends :o

How does one operate the ignore function please?

Thank you.

It's worth noting the ignore function hides the post, but you can see there's a hidden post there... which just creates intrigue and you'll eventually want to view what was said :p

I understand what you are saying, but in this case there will be no intrigue!

Mods, unfortunately sometimes, can't use the ignore function as we need to see all posts where/when possible.

It still amazes me though how even the most frustrating and OT posters sometimes come up with some 'gems' of information.

Yes, I ignored one noted abuser (here and on FT) but found it hard to resist having a look at his latest craziness! No names but some long term members can probably identify him from even this brief description.
