Question : What's funnier than listening to people brag about how little they had to spend on an unnecessary flight?

Answer : Listening to their paranoia that everyone will want to do it!

I was also going to say that some of the "don't tell the plebs" comments were un-Australian ..... but then I realised that the opposite was true.

How sad.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions on whether flying additional flights to gain status, or going through convoluted routing for additional status credits is wise or unwise. Some people choose to do it, some don't... but there are a decent number of people who do, as a small example look at the regular "how do I earn X SC's to make Gold" requests (Also, as another example, have a look over at FT in the Milage Run Boards to see what some people will do).

I think discussing it is very on topic here as it is related to "frequent flying" and increasing/earning status in FF schemes.

Several people's views on this board are well known (and some are posted in this thread!). Which one is the correct one? Who knows... Each to their own.

As for "don't tell the plebs" being Un-Australian, I agree, but only up to a point. If you're commenting on my post, I think I should have worded it better. I'm not against sharing information, but rather not giving everything on a silver platter. People learn from working things out themselves with a little bit of assistance when needed.

This forum is about sharing information, answering questions and providing advice. I think this forum does that well. However there are times when providing information on certain things is not in your best interests.

Anyway, interesting comments. Happy Flying!

Define unnecessary! It means something different for everyone.

You just returned from good old mother land with the mrs and two kids. Was it really necessary? You obviously felt the desire to visit relatives and see the mother country. You went to so much trouble which you could have easily avoided had you stayed in Australia.

Me being just plain stupid and with no family to visit choose to spend my hard earned money on unnecessary flights chasing status. To me these flights are as necessary as you taking the family to visit good old mother land. I try to spend as little as possible for the most gain. When something is taken away from me I get very emotional. It upsets me and I lose sleep over it.

Who is right? Me or you? Is it any of your business? No. So leave me alone and carry on doing what you feel is right and let me make my own decisions on how and where I spend my money without judging me.

he he he. Its good that we are all different and have different priorities. If we all thought the same it would be a boring world! At least that is my opinion . If you want to take SCRuns and you find them of good value to you, then go for it. Don't let anyone else stop you.

It has been my experience over many years that windows of opportunity open and close all the time when it comes to maximising the travel experience (whatever that may mean to each of us). It is through forums like this that I learn of the changing rules and opportunities. It is almost like a game keeping up with the current opportunities. So don't get too upset over one window closing - just keep an eye open for the next one opening.

You're right John - we didn't have to take that trip. But a few years ago my wife and I consciously made the plan to take the family on a O/S trip every 2 years or so. This was to be funded in part by FF points but mostly by the money we save by not sending the kids to schools that have boaters and smelting sticks. As reasonably frequent travellers in our youth, we both recognise the educational value that travelling conveys - particularly when foreign cultures are experienced.

The only real downside to this travel is that in a world under environmental stress, the pollution caused by jet airplanes is of real concern. If for no other reason, this is why flying from A to A via X, Y, & Z simply for "status" seems to smack of hubris.

But as you say - to each their own .... including their sense of humour.
