We had 3 major trips so finding one photo was hard. The highlight was using our points to do a One World explorer in business to Botswana, Zambia, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, England and Hong Kong. The 3 major highlights were safari camps in Botswana, Tallinn in Estonia and Iceland. The driving trip around Iceland was amazing and this photo was taken from the highway in the south-east of Iceland.

In the case of this thread, the OP set the rule - by posting one would be in acceptance of the rule.

The rule is "Post up a photo (only one allowed) of the most interesting/special/significant place you've visited this year.".

I spent time in Monterey and SFO, but not in 5* hotels and Michelin 3-hat food so I guess doesn't qualify for a TR. So respectfully, I submit this photo of sea-nettles at Monterey Aquarium as a most special place I visited:

Maho Beach St Maarten which we visited in November as the capital Philipsburg was a port of call on our cruise on Oasis of the Seas along with Nassau and St Thomas. It's hilarious watching people getting sandblasted by a departing B727 Amerijet cargo plane and either being blown into the water or running in to it to avoid getting peppered.

It's very easy to get to as you can get a share ride in a minivan from the taxi rank at the wharf for US10.00 pp. Allow approx one hour to get there but you want to allow plenty of time to get back particularly if there are several ships in port. You also need to keep in mind that if the Causeway swing bridge is open to allow boats to pass through it will hold up traffic.

Most of the larger aircraft arrive mid afteroon which almost the time to need to leave to get back to port if you're just there for the day on a cruise. We didn't see any 747's but saw an Air France A340 and Ark Fly B787 plus plenty of smaller jets from the various US airlines. In the morning you see a lot of the St Barts commuter aircraft like Winair Twin Otters plus LIAT Dash-8's or ATR's.

image.jpgThe volcanoes and lava fields of the big island of Hawaii was my most interesting place visited.

01451837079.jpg I am not sure whether this was the most interesting place for the year but certainly the most unusual. Just out of Trinidad Bolivia we came across a B727 sitting at the edge of the jungle.

For me it would have to be the Kimberley Coast. It's just a magnificent place

There's an article on Flight Global about the incident which occurred on 01 Feb 2008 when the B727 rego CP-2429 which was on a flight from La Paz to Cobija diverted to Trinidad (TDD) in bad weather.

It had to make an emergency landing in the jungle clearing 5 kms short of the airport allegedly due ro fuel starvation.

I visited the Volcano NP last month, and this exact volcano was erupting. There was a rather impressive orange glow coming from inside the crater after sunset.
It's all in the timing I guess (and a little luck). We we there on thanksgiving day and it had been erupting in the days before but was quiet that day. The sights along chain of craters road are amazing.

Good thread! So many impressive photos.

Speaking about volcanos, we did a walk on an active volcano in White Island last Feb.

It was an interesting (and smelly) experience.

Not so! Any trip report is welcome on AFF. :)

Absolutely coriander.Altough I do stay at 5 star hotels and do eat at 3 hat Michelind restaurants I still love my street food and go to places where there will never be a 5 star hotel. So please do think of doing a TR.I think the majority of AFFers are glad to read a different perspective on travel.
Great photo by the way.

I have been out in the Finnish wilderness quite a few times, but never to a friend's summer cottage. I went this year and it was just incredible.

Wreck diving in Truk Lagoon in Micronesia. Flight shenanigans aside, it was just really weird diving in what's effectively an underwater war grave.

That's the one Oz.

They all got out alive which is what's really amazing.

Malta was amazing for me this year. The 3 cities.

The sign at the front of the museum said:

THE BIRTHPLACE OF AVIATION
Here, on December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made the
first successful power-driven flight in world history.

Then you can go outside and walk the ground and the up to the monument. Nicely understated for LOTFAP.
