Movies to watch

Didn't know it was an 80's series, but really liked the movie. Got to see the last of it on EK today, but had to go searching for it, and was very pleased I did. It probably would have made a lot more sense to your inlaws if it was Chuck Norris and not Denzel Washington in the lead role. Denzel with The Equalizer, Flight, and 2 Guns to name a few of his recent one could argue is really having him gunning to take over Chuck Norris.

Well I saw it in the 1980s. American series with Edward Woodward. (As mentioned) A continuation of his earlier role as Callan. Continuity between different TV series?

Liam Neeson would be another with a sudden move into action movies. Is this an actor's midlife crisis?

Is this thread going to be Movies to Watch or Movies to Watch on Aircraft?

If Movies to Watch, a slightly older movie that I think is quite good is The Railway Man.
I did actually watch it on a flight .

Seems like a year of 'epic' movies going by the previews we saw a week ago.

Avengers 2
Star Wars 7
Jupiter Ascending
Mad Max 4
Mission Impossible 5
Fast and Furious 7...

Or should that be year of the unnecessary sequel?

I've read a number of the books that star wars 7 will be based on. They were entertaining as such. It will be interesting to see where the story ends up. Last I remember from the reading was Luke about to go into battle with another Sith, remnant of the emperor's efforts. Also learned that the Sith have a symbiotic relationship. There are only every 2, with the master or the apprentice always seeking another partner to replace the other. Explaining the final battle between vader and Luke, that was the emperor either replacing vader with a better apprentice or Vader proving his worth. So anyway Luke encounters another potential apprentice groomed by the emperor, at least in the books.

Now Mad Max 4 will be interesting or absolute cough. IMO beyond thunder dome was the unnecessary sequel.

Well each year for the last decade or two the top 10 films list has been dominated by 'known product' ie. books, sequels, spin-offs etc. So when all the biggest franchises have major releases in the one year, it's hard to believe it won't be epic.

But if that's not your thing, in only a month and a half there have been plenty of enjoyable, more discerning releases: Imitation Game, Wild, Kingsman, Theory of Everything, Birdman, American Sniper and Whiplash.

So I guess I stand by my original comment, we do have an epic year ahead. At this stage you may only be familiar with the names of the sequels, but it doesn't mean that's all we have to look forward to.

Someone told me an interesting story after we discussed seeing The Imitation Game. Alan Turing committed suicide by eating an apple laced with cyanide (those who've seen the film might recall the scene at his home, one of the flashbacks (or flashforwards) after he's reportedly been burgled - he's sweeping up cyanide powder. When Steve Jobs was setting up his new company he wanted to acknowledge the contribution of Alan Turing to the world, so thus the apple logo, with the bite out for Alan Turing. Cool huh? I hope it's true

The Babadook.

Hands down best Australian film for years and years.

Or does he have a divorce or similar to pay for? :)

Interesting, but no more spoilers, please! (I know about Turings untimely end ... and am halfway through the book, but still ... )

You can skip Birdman - good acting but very, very average story.

I have never been so bored in my life. I kept waiting for something to happen.
There are probably 500 people in Australia who reckon this is what makes for entertainment.

The 100 Foot Journey with Helen Mirren is a good film to watch on an airplane - very entertaining and doesn't need much concentration (ie you can pause it and come back later after food or sleep). That's not a put down; its a great film.

It goes a little off piste in the middle, otherwise I enjoyed it

Nothing so poetic, the bite was merely to show scale, so that a small logo still, looked like an apple, not a cherry for example.
There are a number of myths about it. The reality is ,ugh simpler.
