Multiple kids watching the one iPad

In a couple of weeks time I'm taking the family over to PER. I'm planning on loading up the iPad with a collection of kid friendly shows and movies. My eldest (just under 4) is able to use headphones, but my two boys (just under 2) are unlikely to keep headphones on for the flight. (Flying on 747 each way with AVOD)

I was thinking about using the iPad speakers on very low as to not disturb others, but what our others opinions, would an iPad with the volume turned right down be an issue?

I think you saw my comments in the other thread - I would experiment in the car maybe as a test - if the kids can hear it and the people in the front seats can't then that is the right volume level... My experience with a 2 1/2 year old though is that he has worked out how to manipulate the iPad and iPhone volume controls...

Hi simongr, yeah I saw your comments in the other thread thus creating this one...

Testing it out in the car is not a bad idea. At this stage they don't know what button is the volume control, I'll be sitting next to the kids and would be able to adjust it down if they did touch it.
Also my wife will be sitting in the seat directly in front of us so I'll ask her to let me know if she thinks the volume is too loud...

Seriously, it all depends. Loud when it's the midde of the night and people are trying to sleep - problem potentially. During the day - no real issue for me - volume dependant. Again, choice of programming will factor in too.

I don't think the iPad speakers could be heard much above the aircraft noise. In my experience most little ones are happy to watch without sound if they don't want to keep the headphones on. Let the eldest listen through the headphones and have a multi-adapter and a couple of cheap around ear headphones just in case.

Airplane drone will probably make it impossible to hear anything at low levels.

I would most likely be annoyed by children/someone using a speaker, but will not say anything because I don't like confrontations.

But will be hoping for the windows next to the offender to magically open, suck the offender out, and magically close again!

Headphone splitters are the way to go, or some baby formula panadol to send them to sleep.

OT - it's funny what people think is appropriate to watch on their Ipads and other devices in a public environment.....on a recent flight my kids got an eye full of "True Blood" that some knob across the aisle decided to watch. Took me a little to work out what they were watching (S&M whilst sucking blood from another) before I got up and told him what I thought about his viewing choice.

FA was near by & saw what was going on and suggested that he choose something else to watch.

Got me thinking about how airlines are going to police censorship/rating issue in the future? I'm no anti anything....but, there is a time & place for everything.

You'd be surprised how noisy it really is on an airborne jet.

I doubt anyone - including the kids - would be able to hear anything with the speakers down low.

Yes, it's on TV and it's also rated.....we have a rating system to ensure age appropriate audience.

A plane is not an individuals lounge room - it's public space and therefore, subject to rules. Anyone that allows or knowing continues to allow a child to watch a program like that needs their head read.

Honestly, blinkers for 5 year olds Sitting on a plane and expecting a child is not subjected to adult themes is a right not a privilege.

Frankly I think you should focus on your own entertainment and not watch other peoples' What about all movies on aircraft - plenty of violence on those that can be watched both directly by kids and indirectly. If you had tried to tell me what I can and I can't watch I would have respectfully requested you to return to your seat and not try and watch what was on my screen. I would have also suggested to the FA that my choice of entertainment on a flight was my choice and had no impact for safety and was none of their business.

I could certainly hear the iPad - it was actually my PER-SYD flight on DJ/VA - I was in 1C and they were in 2DF.

A couple of years ago I was watching a movie on the IFE (B743 so loop system only) and the movie had a section with full frontal nudity. Needless to say I was very surprised (I hadn't seen the movie before and there was nothing in the title to suggest that scene was there) that it had gotten pasted the censors. I'm certainly no prude, but I turned it over to another channel pretty quickly (the movie was pretty boring anyway) because of the whole time and place thing. IMHO on board an aircraft is not the time or place to test humanities resolve to certain situations.

Yeah, I've done the Dora phase - time has moved on for us.

Back to the the the topic - I don't think the noise will cause you or others any dramas. I've had to endure passengers that are far more annoying then old Dora or any other kids show.

Hello,

I would suggest that you try and use headsets as best as you can. Even though the aircraft noise may help drown out the noise for other passengers, this same noise would mean it would have to be turned up louder than normal so the children are able to listen to this. This can be a touchy issue for crew to ultimately manage, but as people have suggested an aircraft is not one's personal lounge room and should be treated accordingly.

I would imagine the noise would be as irritating as the noise that emits from some people's headphones on public transport - i.e. very. I agree with the posters who suggest the headphones and multi-jack adaptor.

And the poster who thought it was okay to berate the person for their viewing decision when that show was made available on the IFE - if you had done the same to me, you would have been told in no uncertain terms that you are responsible for your kids, not me. I probably would have thrown in some really rude words too, just to annoy your self-righteous cough.
