It seems the best way to book is via the AA rtw desk rather than locally through QF? Less fuel sucharge? Have I read this correctly?
Yes, correct reading.

As NM said, how much are you prepared to pay? I've been Pt for years, and it's very nice - often upgraded from business to first etc. But look at the realities :

1. 1st class check in - might save 5 minutes compared to business.
2. 1st class lounge - very nice in Sydney (over the top). LA is usually less crowded etc. Many airports don't have a 1st class lounge. All I need is a comfortable seat, quiet, drinks and a snack.
3. Occasional upgrade business to first. I rarely fly economy but maybe upgrades are also likely.
There are other benefits, but none that really matter to me.

How much would I pay to go from gold to Platinum? $100, $500, $1,000? If I was sure I would do a lot of flying in the following year, I might fork out $200 on an additional flight just to get to Pt. Otherwise, I'd settle for gold, and spend or invest my money somewhere else. Your choice on how much you think it's worth.

As always YMMV. For me what seems like limitless baggage allowances for WP is worth $1,500-$2,000 per year to me easily. All the other perks are just "nice"

Will see how QF treat me (in relation to my use of checked luggage) when I fall back to Gold in october.

I often travel with 5-7 boxes around 30kg each + a suitcase.

I know this has been thrashed about previously, but I didn't get enough points to renew Pt this year. I wrote to Qantas, showing that I had bookings, and to consider my previous record (Pt for many years). They extended my Pt status for another year.

The DCIRC22 fare would be ideal if I can score it at the ex-HKG or ex-TWN price. The QF price seems the most expensive.

I am in IT. Servers, Switches, Radios. Boreing stuff. (But heavy)

Now funnily enough my puter has been running funny lately....

Needs a rebuild so maybe that was the reason!

I assume you are referring to a computer and not a putter.

It is most likely a coincidence that my putter has been running funny lately. It is a new putter so does not require a rebuild....

WP does have its undisclosed benefits.

Just last week, my flight from MEL-PER was delayed 3.5 hours. We were traveling BNE-PER with a transit in MEL.

So this is what i did.

Went up to the QC service counter and showed them both boarding passes (traveling with my wife, who is also a WP).

"Given that the flight is delayed, and we are both Platinum members, would it be possible for an operational upgrade?"

"Not usually" .... type type type on the computer "But I will see what I can do. Just come back before departure."

Came back 30 mins before departure and got 2 biz boarding passes... :)

We were traveling on O class fares (Red-E-Deals)!!

The discount ecomony status credits still posted to our FF accounts. Now i'm missing the BNE-MEL points, we had to switch to an earlier flight, because our original flight was delayed. Otherwise we would have missed the MEL-PER flight... ironic when you think about it. Fingers crossed that the online claim works!

You don't think my bronze status would've pulled the same result??

Carefully booked, 3 return YUPS from any of these ports can net you the 1400 SC's required for approx USD3000.

Looking to book some KUPS for later in the year. I vaguely seem to recall an issue a year or so ago (may have been on FT) where a poster had problems with flights crediting as first class. This was because status credits relied on booking class rather than seating class.

Anyone got recent experience with booking YUP/KUP fares on aa.com and not having them credit to QF as first class?

Thanks,
Justin.

In November, I flew 11 segments on YUP type fares - all booked into P class.

Of these, 10 were credited as First Class, one as "Full Economy" - A qucik call to QFF followed by a fax with copies of BP's etc fixed this.

FWIW, this is the only flight I have had since Qantas introduced TC's/SC's that has ever credited as "Full WHY".:-|

Cool. I wasn't sure if P class would credit as F.

Are you willing to share some of those segments serfty? So far i have SFO-DFW-TPA-ORD-DFW-SFO which is 510 SCs for AU$1066 and seems reasonable. (multi segments of SFO-TPA-ORD-SFO).

As posted, ATL and SFO seem ok ATM.

Note ex SFO has some good ones (try MCO - 540 SC's for USD1100 at last look).

Things may change as QF starts to use P for first class awards. But we will need to wait and see how intelligent the automated system is. But even if it does not auto-post correctly, there is no doubt that a fare booked in A class on AA should get First Class earning on QF FF.

To be pedantic, checked luggage is not anathema to YUP's; checked luggage is anathema to MR's; especially multi segment routings with several connections.

YUPS are a great way to travel First class in the US without worrying about getting upgrades/upgraded. It's only when they are employed (as I ans others do) to gain/retain status that checking bags is to be avoided.

e.g. SEA-JFK-SEA can be had for USD1155 and would earn 300 SC's with QFF, by all means take the direct flights and enjoy your trip.

If looking for additional SC's, then book SEA-DFW-EWR-DFW-SEA for USD1160 and earn 480 SC's - but don't check baggage.

Can someone explain why you shouldn't check baggage? My google-foo is weak tonight (most searche results include the term "yup" rather than tha YUP booking class)

Thanks in advance
