NBN Discussion

Thanks for the thought.

I'm now thinking about getting the external splitter removed before the NBN people are due again. That will leave a single line into the house and to the required point.

Difficult to trust the NBN techs because they are acting in the interests of their head contractor who is contracted by NBN. Too many layers.

Some have even replaced their existing telephone wire (on their side) with new and better quality cable.

Evening slowdowns are generally related to your RSP rather than technology delivery

(Save for a select number of FW sites that need backhaul upgrades)

IMO due to both.

1)NBN pricing model causing RSP to buy minimum CVC (recently slight pricing changes have seen average CVC provisioned from 1-1.5Mbps)
2) RSP not provisioning adequate CVC.

Some? Many? (Who knows) FW towers need either tower upgrade - more cells, more frequency spectrum and/or backhaul upgrade - most of these apparently are via an increase in backhaul frequency bandwidth and a few getting fibre.

Telstra apparently limiting FW plans to 25/5. Some providers are not even selling plans to certain towers due to max congestion.

My planned FW tower only has backhaul frequency bandwidth of 150Mbps for the entire tower

Not sure of 5G but our mobile reception at home has been flaky since we got home 3 weeks ago.telstra's answer-turn off 4g and 3G should be better.o_O

5g is the next generation digital communication operating in frequency spectrums 20-40Ghz, the bandwidths are massive therefore speeds can be very high
There is no 5G operating anywhere in the world at the moment. South Korea is testing/showcasing/trialling a version of it at the winter Olympics.
However its all speculation at the moment with lots of hyperbole.

Not quite sure how to feel when NBN (or its contractors) turned up 2 weeks ago to attach this to the wall at the back of my shop/office a couple of weeks ago. Knew from my IT contractor they had done other streets around us:

I'm prescribing myself a wait and see, like a good doctor. Have iiNet now so have to nut out relevant offers from the panel of suppliers and talk to my IT consultant to work out which is best. I'm less fussed about higher speed, I'd trade for less dropouts (we are 2kms from our exchange so by the time it gets here, its degraded a bit). Being in a strip shop from the 70's doesn't help either.

FTTP/B/C/N, HFC,FW,Sat??

Turns out it was HFC so within a couple of weeks of installation, it was redundant when they switched it off. So now I have a useless box on the back wall (thankfully outside). Won't be in a hurry to accept anything NBN put in next time.

What are the thoughts on 5g offerings as an alternative. The linked article indicating options such as 200gb for $149 with data sharing multiple sim access & calls included. I guess not having experienced NBN our habits may change but we currently only use 50gb a month

Prepare For 5G With These Massive Data Plans | Lifehacker Australia
I have have had my 4g plan for three months now. Very happy with 70Gb data in AU and 2Gb and unlimited calls overseas. I am fortunate that the area I live has strong mobile strength/speeds.

I pay $5 a month for a second sim card in a mobile router which is always on at home for the smart TV, printer etc.

After the initial disaster actually getting connected to NBN, I ended up with a connection at about 46 meg/sec. That has slowly degraded to about 42 meg/sec now. That isn't the download speed, but simply the actual synch speed. So, I've got about 8 years before it's back to dial up.

It is one reason why I won't go with Aussie Broadband. They put it in to fault find but want to charge me to remove it.

I don't think the techs you are dealing with have anything to do with ABB. They're just the cheapest contractors that NBN could find in your area.

Just spoke with Jindy friend (I borrowed his NBN to upload my multi gig data file to the cloud last winter

Speed is now down to approx 70 in evening rush hour. Original >90. Telstra FTTN.

I don’t know why he is on the highest plan. They are only a couple no kids and only uses about 200Gb a month. The only thing he streams is Netflix non HD. He could go with 25/5 and not notice a difference. It’s not as though everyone in the street notices the super fast internet unlike a flash new car in the driveway...

Agreed John. I just struggle with there attitude toward resolving issues. I currently have an abnormal setup thanks to their methodology and which they wanted me to pay to fix.

Lets hope this helps:

Missed installation appointments to mean penalties for NBN Co
...NBN Co will have to end the tardiness within months or face penalties, ACCC Chairman Rod Sims has revealed.

"[The regulation] will go to people turning up when they say they'll turn up and penalties if that doesn't happen," he told Patricia Karvelas on the National Wrap, confirming the new rules would be introduced "some time this year".
