NBN Discussion

Seriously. Why did anyone think the NBN was a good idea when in reality, we've been sold a bunch of *******.

We were meant to be visited by the NBN technician this morning. When they didn't appear I enquired and was told that they had visited and there are some issues with the house wiring that needs to be sorted.

No they did not visit and yes there is an issue to which I alluded to some time ago here. Not apologetic at all and now we have another appointment for Thursday next week and the need to access the house. (They could have knocked this morning IF they had actually turned up)

They were quite full of themselves until I called them out on the fact that they didn't actually turn up. They then went quiet on that and moved onto needing another appointment.

NBN was supposed to visit me 5 times and never showed up or contacted me any of these times. They did require me to be home for a 5 hour window each time though!

There is now a section on the TIO web site referring to NBN.
I haven’t had time to go right into it yet.

Nothing much there. At most:
"A joint federal inquiry into the NBN recently last month recommended - among other things - that the TIO be “empowered to compel any relevant parties to a complaint to meet together or otherwise cooperate in order to facilitate the resolution of that complaint within a set reasonable timeframe"

TIO rejigs to better handle NBN complaints

Unlike the ACCC which has some teeth.

My gripe today is more about them lying and saying they had called when they had not. If they had a problem and couldn't make it I would be annoyed but to simply not turn up and not communicate the issue until queried and then to tell a lie when queried puts me a long way beyond annoyed.

I think it’s more fluid then that, .......they were within 5 min drive of your place.

Straitman, what technology is NBN offering you? I cant remember/
FTTN.

The lines at the house need to be modified as there is a splitter at the front that has a specific line to the ADSL point.

It is one reason why I won't go with Aussie Broadband. They put it in to fault find but want to charge me to remove it.

Well a splitter is needed for ADSL2.
But not ideal for FTTN.

One of the ways that the FTTN saves money is that any internal issues beyond NTD/First point become the problem of the home owner.

It works well if you have a single point.

At least the good thing with NBN is its easy to shift to different RSP if you dont like current one!. I intend to not be on a plan for that reason.

Unfortunately for me my NBN will be the terrible Fixed wireless and not until 2020.

In other fora, people have apparently seen significant increases in speed because they checked and remediated any internal copper cabling issues (at their cost) before connecting to FTTN.

One of the other benefits of doing this is problems with NBN after installation is unlikely to be your copper and you can tell RSP/NBN that its their end that is the problem.

Satellite is terrible (relatively)
Fixed wireless still has decent pings, and no nasty data limits.

I thought most of the FW areas were almost complete

We must be one of the last (being a Federal non swing seat)
FW will have decent pings but many towers are already congested causing NBN to have to upgrade the towers. Not a CVC issue - the bottle neck is at the tower itself. Then think of a FW tower as a node. Unlike a node which backhauls with fibre. a FW tower backhauls wirelessly to one or more FW tower before it goes fibre.

Thanks for the thought.

I'm now thinking about getting the external splitter removed before the NBN people are due again. That will leave a single line into the house and to the required point.
